How can you get the information you need from the gardener you're working with? Use Plant Diagnostic Questions to lead your inquiry, and the tips below when asking questions.
Focus on gathering information, not looking to confirm a diagnosis.
Ask open-ended questions that help gather information and lead to dialog and conversation, such as "tell me how you water your plants" or "tell me about your fertilization program."
Avoid using jargon and terminology that may be unfamiliar, like "petioles", "frass", or "soil type".
Remember that their familiarity and experience with gardening and plants may differ from yours.
Avoid leading and accusatory questions, such as "did you over-fertilize the plant?" or "did you give the plant too much water?"
Ask questions about the situation which the gardener may not think apply to the plant problem.
Ask for pictures. If some pictures are provided, ask for more. Get a look at the whole plant, in addition to leaves and buds.
