The central selection criterion is the potential of the applicant and their mentoring team to apply and compete successfully for a highly competitive R01 or equivalent. A holistic approach will be applied in the selection process.
Previous research and academic experience
Passion for research and potential for career trajectory in clinical or translational research
Quality of planned research study including hypothesis to be tested, aims, significance, innovation, translation plan, incorporation of biostatistical analysis
Preliminary data and/or relevant publications in support of the proposed research
Clinical relevance, potential for future funding, and reasonableness of project
Multidisciplinary nature of the primary and tertiary mentors (if applicable)
Plans for interacting with mentors to plan for submission of R01 or equivalent
Commitment of 50% protected time if K-R01 funding extends beyond K award
Plan for integration of the Scholar into the unit’s activities
Plan for supporting and facilitating a long-term research career path for the candidate
Experience with research theme proposed by the candidate
Plans for interaction with Scholar and integration with mentoring team to ensure timely submission of R01 or equivalent
Listing of NIH funding record (current and past)
Record in training and guiding mentees to apply for R01 or equivalent funding
Clinical or translational research publication record
Previous and current mentoring experience and success, including placement of past faculty, post-doctoral and pre-doctoral trainees
Experience with study design and statistical analysis of clinical or translational research projects
Experience with research theme proposed by the candidate
Plans for interaction and career development of scholars
Previous and current mentoring experience and success, including placement of past trainees
