Your health coverage as a resident will be provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield and will take effect your first day of employment, June 5, 2025. Their in-network list of providers is large, and not limited to a single healthcare system. This website can assist you in finding primary care or specialist providers and learning more about your plan in case you need to start making appointments now.Â
Please connect with Heidi at imres@umn.edu about fitting appointment times into the orientation schedule if needed. We will do our best to accommodate them whenever possible.
The University of Minnesota partners with Vital Work-Life, a company that helps you connect with whatever resources you may need to manage your life in this busy occupation. We will have them present more details to you and give you access codes during orientation, but please feel free to explore their website: https://www.vitalworklife.com/
Their offered services include:
Appointment scheduling
Travel and entertainment planning
Personal tasks and to-dos
Home and auto services
Elder, pet and child care coordination
Event planning and logistics (e.g., wedding planning)
and many, many more
After extensive vetting, the University has partnered with Foster Klima for Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) Disability Insurance. We know you're probably not thinking about disability insurance at this point in your life, but it's actually important that you do this A) before you become disabled, and B) before any other individual disability insurance denies you coverage. Most disabilities occur as a result of illnesses, not injuries. Imagine receiving a diagnosis of cancer or an autoimmune disorder that will disrupt your ability to earn an income as you've always expected and planned for. While still devastating, knowing that you are financially protected can make a huge difference to you and your family in that moment.
GSI insurance does not require a physical or any health screenings. The only criteria are as listed above: you cannot already be disabled, and you cannot have been previously denied disability coverage.
For more information about the importance of disability insurance and the benefits of a GSI, you can read this Doximity Op-Ed.
For more information or to sign up for disability insurance through Foster Klima, details can be found on our Resident Health Benefits page.
The University's Resident and Fellow Support Resources page has additional information about accessing mental health support, career coaching, family care support, and additional resources. We recommend you look through the list to have a basic familiarity with available resources, even if you don't anticipate needing them any time soon.
