In Extension, we use University-owned or County-owned computers that are on the Windows operating system. Basic computer use is a requirement of every job in Extension. Having at least a basic understanding of computer hardware can help you identify and troubleshoot problems, connect devices, and work in different locations with confidence. Office equipment (e.g. printers) will vary between offices and locations but if you have a handle on the basic functions, it's usually easy to figure out how to use different equipment.
Can perform basic operations on computer hardware
Can set up and use projectors and other audio-visual equipment relevant for Extension programming
Know how to connect a device (laptop, cellphone) to the University’s Wi-Fi network
Knows how log in to the shared or conference room equipment in their office or campus based area’s
Can perform basic print tasks
Windows is what controls everything on the computer -- the hardware, storage, software applications, multitasking, internet access, etc. The more you understand about Windows, the more productive you will be. Below are the basic skills you need but we recommend you dig deeper into the additional resources if you can.
Able to use Windows to launch programs, manage programs in multiple windows, and organize files
Use the Task Manager to force quit unresponsive programs and processes
Performs basic computer maintenance, such as emptying the Recycle Bin and rebooting as prompted for updates
Know how to install and uninstall software
Keeps all needed files regularly backed up via the University of Minnesota network (also known as your “H:” drive or “S:” drive for shared files), Google Drive, Shared Drives, or by other reliable method
