Week 3
University Native American Promise Tuition
For the Fall 2022 semester, the University of Minnesota Native American Promise Tuition Program extended to all campuses rather than only the Morris campus. The program offers a full tuition waiver for students from specific Tribal Nations. Take a look at the full University policy linked below and think about the requirements for eligibility.
This article from the Star Tribune reveals some shortcomings of the program with how few students are eligible and receive benefits from said program.
According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, to register with a federally acknowledged tribe requires you to acquire "genealogical research, documented your ancestry, and determined the tribe with which your ancestor was affiliated". Read the other article linked that addresses critiques of the requirements of genealogical tracing regarding Native/Indigenous identity.
Think too, about the economic or societal privilege that is required to find and preserve these documents, especially with the forced removal of Indigenous people from Minnesota.
In at least 250 words discuss the benefits and drawbacks of the program. Write about what you think should be done to increase access to the program for Native/Indigenous students referencing the materials provided this week and previous weeks.
