Q1: I recently have a stroke and was told that I need physiotherapy and occupational therapy treatment. What are the differences between the two? Can I only attend one?
A: Both have different roles. Physiotherapy treatment will help you to improve your physical ability, balance and mobility; including bed mobility, positioning from lying to sitting, standing and walking. Occupational therapy treatment will help you to optimise your functional abilities and activities of daily living including personal, domestic and community activities. It is important for you to attend both therapies to maximise your ability to return to function and have a good quality of life. You may also be referred for speech & language therapy if necessary.

Q2: I have a severe back pain. I was told that physiotherapy can help with me back pain How do I receive the physiotherapy service in UMMC?
A: It is very important for you to seek medical assessment from your doctor first. Should your doctor decides that further assessment and physiotherapy treatments are suitable for your diagnosis, the doctor can write a referral to the physiotherapist. A correct diagnosis that can guide your rehabilitation management.

Q3: Can my family members (relatives) send me supplies (medicines , food, etc) to the rehabilitation ward?
A: No. You will need to call our clinic to reschedule your exercise stress test appointment date. Performing an exercise stress test during an acute illness is not advisable as it may be harmful.

Q4: I have elective admission to Rehabilitation ward. Do I need to undergo swab testing before admission?
A: No, but you will need to be screened beforehand and if you are unwell or have any history of close contact, please let us know, then we will advise you accordingly.

Q5: My mother recently had a stroke. I am interested with rehabilitation service for her. How do I engage with the rehab service?
A: If she received initial stroke treatment from UMMC, please kindly request for a referral to be made to Rehabilitation Department from her primary team. If she had treatment from other hospitals, kindly request for your doctor to refer to us, with full medical report and ideally with relevant imaging (ie scans) files.

Q6: I recently had an amputation of my leg. I am interested to get a prosthetic leg. Who can I ask for opinion on the best prosthetic leg for me?
A: Prior to prosthetic restoration, it is recommended for you to go for pre-prosthetic training and proper assessment. Please kindly request your doctor to make referral to our Amputee Rehabilitation service.

Q7: My father is a pensioner. Recently he needs a wheelchair to move everywhere. He also needs a hospital bed. What are the process for me to apply for JPA funding?
A: If your father is currently an inpatient in UMMC, your doctor will make a referral to the Rehab team. If your father has been discharged, please request the doctor to make a referral to Rehab Team. An assessment needs to be made for us to determine the best equipment should be available for you.

Q8: I am concerned that my child may have a speech delay. How do I get him or her to engage in speech therapies?
A: We would advise arranging an appointment with Paediatric Medical Service for further assessment in order to rule out any other neurological condition. A hearing test would also be essential to further plan the therapy.

Q9: The brake of my wheelchair has spoiled. Is there any place where I can fix that?
A: You can find wheelchair services on the Ground floor Menara Selatan at Rehab Technology & Wheelchair Services.

Q10: I would like to apply for OKU registration. How do I do so?
A: Any fully registered medical practitioner are able to do assessment for OKU registration and endorse (sign) the registration form. If you are already a patient under UMMC Rehabilitation Team, please kindly ask your doctor about it during appointment.
