The University of Michigan regularly offers Filipino, Hebrew, Indonesian, Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese, Quechua, and Yiddish through the BTAA CourseShare program. Languages we offered previously are Bengali, Ladino (Judaeo-Spanish) and ___.
You can find more information about U-Michigan offering courses on their individual pages or email lrc.contact@umich.edu if you have more questions.
The University of Michigan regularly receives Cantonese, Khmer, Mongolian, Uzbek and Nahuatl, but we may receive other languages by request. Please contact your advisor to express your interest. They can liaise with the Department Chair and campus CourseShare Coordinator to initiate the partnership.
Generally, a CourseShare class can be taught in the following ways:
(1) Room-to-room: The instructor teaches from a classroom with students from the home institution. Students from other BTAA institutions also meet in a classroom on their campus to join the class via video conferencing.
(2) Room-to-individual: The instructor teaches from a classroom with students from the home institution. Students from other BTAA institutions join on their own computers individually at a quiet place.
(3) Everyone online: The instructor teaches on their own computer, and all the students join on their own at a quiet place.
The course modality is decided by the instructor after carefully evaluating the pedagogical needs of students taking the course. The decision is often involved technology affordances, class activities, the level of students, and so on. Each modality will include synchronous and asynchronous components, planned to best facilitate your learning.
If you have any questions about how the course is taught or would like more information about the student experience in a CourseShare class, we encourage you to reach out to the instructor. They can provide valuable insights and guidance on the course modality and how it can best meet your pedagogical needs.
Consult with your advisor about CourseShare possibilities. Your advisor can liaise with their Department Chair and campus CourseShare Coordinator who will assess the need in the department for partnering with another Big Ten institution to receive the course.
If you are interested in taking courses offered by the University of Michigan, you can learn more about our regular course offerings and contact the instructor directly.
No, you will pay your normal tuition; no additional administrative fees will be charged. However, you should be aware that you may need to purchase the textbook or online access required by the instructor, as these may not be covered by your tuition.
When you are enrolled in a CourseShare course offered by another BTAA institution, you will have an official student account of the institution. You can access the library resources, such as a research journal or movie, using the student account.
Taking a course offered at another BTAA institution through CourseShare means you will be temporarily enrolled in the institution as a student. You will have a username of the institution so you can access their learning management system.
Important:
You will be using your home institution's email to access the LMS at the beginning of the semester before your enrollment is finalized at the hosting institution.
For example, you are a student from Michigan State University, taking a course offered at the University of Michigan (U-M). You will use your MSU email to access the U-M Canvas site at the beginning of the semester. Later when you have a U-M username, you will use it to access the U-M Canvas site and other resources.
Specifically, when you are taking a course offered at the University of Michigan, you will receive an email inviting you to create a uniqname. You will log in to U-M websites and submit your assignments using the uniqname.
Each institution might run this differently, but overall, your instructor may provide you temporary access to the course materials in one of the following ways.
(1) Put a subset of the course materials in a cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox or One Drive) for you to access them.
(2) Your instructor will give you temporary access to the Canvas site. You will use your own email to register a temporary account. Take the University of Michigan for example. You will receive an invitation with a link to register a temporary account (friend account). And use the account and passcode to log in to Michigan Canvas.
