The United States Department of Energy (DOE) finds that "heat gain and heat loss through windows are responsible for 25%–30% of residential heating and cooling energy use". Because of the specifications of Passivhaus, we had to look at many different window designs and types in order to find the right one that worked for us. Passivhaus has a heavy emphasis on making sure there are no thermal gaps and the insulation is effective. Windows need to be airtight and have low heat transfer to maintain the Passivhaus standards. The best window design for our project is a triple-pane design. We decided to go with Ali-Clas Passivhaus windows because of their exterior aluminum cladding, and their natural timber interior design.
