The Burr on Summit - a Net-Zero, Passivhaus, LEED Platinum, mixed-income, fine-grained neighborhood development with twenty-two units of various sizes nestled on Summit Street – a quintessential Ann Arbor tree-lined street. Named after the Burr Oak, the tree that Ann Arbor is named after, the Burr on Summit represents the regenerative nature of trees that make Ann Arbor beautiful.
The Burr on Summit is meant to instill all the values that the community holds. Sustainability, affordability, a neighborhood scale all make it a piece of real estate that was born to call Ann Arbor home.
First, The Burr is designed with income integration in mind. Economically integrated neighborhoods are neighborhoods that flourish with art and culture, with different ages and races. The Burr's mixed-income design allows for families of all shapes and sizes to share a space, to be positive neighbors, to grow together in a way that resembles the Ann Arbor that people know and love – one that is inclusive, accepting, and dynamic. Our residents will include workers at small businesses, professionals at a variety of firms, students, families of all shapes, and people of all ages. The Burr will be a microcosm of everything that makes Ann Arbor great – the people.
Being on the Treeline Trail gives us the ability to orient our development towards the environment. Our investment into the Trail includes a small meander, giving passersby a view of the rain garden, full of native plants and frequented by native fauna.
Our residents will have access to amenities that make their ability to live and work better, as well as a design that enables socially healthy living. Designing apartments with family oriented floorplans enables people to work from home better, but also to live as a family more effectively. Floorplans are often overlooked, but can when designed intentionally, can increase tenant retention and quality of life. Using a single stair core, rarely found in developments in the US and Canada, allows us to make all the residents of the building a single community – think of the stair core like a short street. E-Cargo Bike-Share allows our residents to take bigger trips on bike, buying essentials or taking the kids out for the day.
Listening to Ann Arbor public comment sessions, some things are abundantly clear. The community wants to see affordable housing and sustainability. We are providing a mixed-income development that is over more than just net-zero, in fact, our development helps the community continue to hit emissions targets.
Our site has a few key elements. First, the building. Our building takes into account the most cutting edge sustainability technology while innovating in eliminating real estate constraints like operating costs. Second, the rain garden. We designed a beautiful garden to complement the Treeline Trail and mitigate stormwater issues from the surroundings. Third, the solar panels and sustainable energy utility. Our solar installation will provide a community owned solar development to the surrounding neighborhood, offering a low-cost zero-carbon energy source to the community.
