There are so many wonderful things I could say about the language instruction I received in the RC French program, but what is so unique and incredible about the experience is the cohort you sit down and speak with everyday. These are the same conversations that trickled from class into the Blue Cafe every evening. Between supportive professors who care about our individual success and the students who share a desire to learn the language, what I received is a community with friends I still keep up with as a Senior despite our class schedules having diverged. We not only learned the French language along the way, but made connections because of it.

Now that my RC language experience is coming to a close, I wanted to thank [the French program] for everything! Because of the impact this program has had on me, I am continuing with French as a double major alongside history. [The instructor’s teaching style made me feel truly comfortable practicing the language, and my dedication to improving my French skills has exceeded my expectations. The subject matter for readings really captivated my interest and motivated me to work as hard as possible to articulate my reaction to the philosophies we studied.

I have absolutely LOVED my experience in RC French. Even after a week or two, I could easily tell that my French skills were a thousand times better and I felt so much more comfortable speaking and understanding French. The lunch tables also allowed me to meet some of my closest friends and have genuine conversations with them (even if they were a little uncomfortable at first), which is something that really helped me to feel at home at Umich and in the RC. And of course, all of the staff is amazing! It's very obvious that they genuinely care about me and my well being alongside my French skills and I've never had a problem talking to them about my concerns (in and out of class).

When I entered the Residential College, I was a bilingual student. Nevertheless, I was deeply intrigued by the semi-immersive language program that the RC offers. I knew through personal experience how beneficial knowing multiple languages can be, and really wanted to explore a new language. [...] I am very grateful for my teachers, and I am very satisfied with my choice to learn a new language through the RC.

RC French Program DEI Statement
The RC French program strives to create an inclusive environment that supports diversity in all its forms. We welcome collaboration with all students to ensure best classroom practices are in place and we encourage ongoing conversations on perceived barriers to inclusivity in the foreign-language teaching/learning context. Given that French, like all Romance languages, is gendered, we are actively committed to aiding students of all gender identities express themselves within the current limitations of the language. As cultural contexts evolve, so do language systems, but it is important to understand that changes and implementation of new forms take time.
