The Tools
To succeed at SSW, get the tools you need, and learn those tools.
You will need a laptop computer and software.
You can register your laptop and other valuable items through the U-M Department of Public Safety and Security (DPSS), to deter theft and facilitate recovery of missing items.
Expect to write using both Microsoft Office and Google Docs.
Microsoft Word is better for formatting, but Google Docs makes collaboration easier.
You can get Office 365 for free, as a U-M student
Tips for collaboration on Google Docs, from the Chronicle of Higher Education
Some courses will require additional software such as SPSS. You can purchase software at significant discount through the U-M Tech Shop. (U-M login may be required)
Plan ahead. Learn to use your hardware and software long before any due dates.
The U-M Library offers online resources and free workshops to teach many tools.
Key Online Systems to Learn
Canvas - the U-M course management system
If you submit a paper via Canvas, your instructor may make comments within Canvas, both summary comments (easy to view in a box by the side of your text) and specific comments directly on your text.
To view their comments on your text, you need to download the paper, not just view it. (Look for a small download icon.) Detailed instructions here.
Wolverine Access - gateway to U-M administrative systems
If you prefer to use a name other than your legal name, set your preferred name using Wolverine Access. This tool should also let you add accent marks and otherwise correct how your name appears in U-M systems.

As a student, you have access to amazing resources, including technology. Alumni retain access to some resources, but not all.
