Welcome to January's meeting. You are officially half of the way through the program! This month, we will focus on the critical skill of networking. Building and maintaining professional relationships is vital for your career growth and personal development. Networking not only helps in finding job opportunities but also provides insights, additional mentorship, and support throughout your academic career journey. In this meeting, we will explore effective networking strategies, discuss best practices, and make plans to expand your connections outside of your mentoring relationship.
Review Networking Resources: Familiarize yourself with current best practices for networking, including tips for effective communication and relationship building.
Reflect on Personal Networking Experiences: Prepare to share your own experiences with networking, including any successes, lessons learned, and strategies that have worked for you.
Consider Mentee’s Progress and Needs: Think about the mentee’s goals and progress so far. Identify specific areas where you can offer advice, resources, or connections to help them improve their networking skills.
Reflect on Networking Experiences from the Fall: Take notes on your experiences, including key conversations, new contacts made, and any challenges or awkward moments you encountered.
Identify Networking Goals: Think about what you want to achieve through networking. Consider the types of professionals you want to connect with and any upcoming events you plan to attend.
Prepare Questions and Discussion Points: Develop specific questions about networking strategies, how to follow up with new contacts, and how to leverage LinkedIn and other tools effectively.
** The SPH Careers Team has many available networking resources available to students on the SPH Career Resource Site. If mentees would like department specific networking guides, they can access them here.
Make sure to join the official student and alumni LinkedIn group for connections beyond the mentorship program.
