Here's where you learn how to build a basic survey in Qualtrics. Qualtrics is a very powerful and advanced tool. These two practice surveys will only scratch the surface of what is possible. But first...
As a student accessing the U-M Qualtrics environment, you are allowed to create any number of surveys but you are only allowed to "own" three active surveys at any given time. The owner of the survey is the person who creates the survey.
When it comes time to build actual surveys for your UROP project, your research project sponsor should create and therefore own them. Once the sponsor creates a survey, they can add you as a Collaborator.
Sharing surveys is not covered in the survey-building tutorials developed by Middle Tennessee State or San Diego State.
We will return to this very important detail during the Wrap-Up.
Follow along with this "Qualtrics Beginner Tutorial" posted on YouTube by Dare McNamara of Middle Tennessee State University. The video is 10 minutes long but it will likely take you 15-20 minutes to build your survey. The resulting survey is not a perfect example of survey design, but the video does a good job of demonstrating the basics. Make sure you create your practice survey in our U-M environment.
In the video, McNamara copies and pastes from a Microsoft Word document. You should use this Google Drive document: Survey 1 copy-paste document (updated, Feb 2024).
You will want to have the YouTube video open in one browser tab/window; Qualtrics open in another; and the Drive doc open in yet another.
Follow along with this "Introduction to Making a Qualtrics Survey" posted on YouTube by Dr. Baker of San Diego State. This video is 50 minutes long and many of the more advanced features of Qualtrics. Please Note: this sample survey is about marketing craft beer. If you do not want to create a survey about beer, contact scholarspace@umich.edu.
In the video, Baker copies and pastes from a Google Drive document. Look for a link to the document in the description field for the video..
Again, you will want to have three windows available at once: Qualtrics for building the survey, the Drive document to copy and paste from, and YouTube for the video.
Once you've successfully built both practice surveys, you're ready to learning about accessibility in Qualtrics.
