PROGRAMS AND CLINICS
The University of Michigan has numerous clinical resources that provide exemplary patient care and further the field of obesity medicine.
Your exposure to these experiences will provide the foundation for your training to be a leader in obesity medicine.
A primary care-based program that embeds an obesity medicine expert within primary care sites. The Weight Navigation Physician acts as the "local consultant" to evaluate patients with obesity. After evaluation, a treatment plan is developed that could involve navigation to another weight service (e.g. bariatric surgery) or enrollment in the WNP Treatment Pathway (Dietary intervention, Medication intervention, or both).
A two+ year intensive, medical weight management program built on the foundation of structure and accountability. The program utilizes total meal replacement for the first 12 weeks, partial meal replacement for 4-12 weeks, and then an individualized dietary plan thereafter. Individuals have frequent dietitian visits and periodic physician visits.
Michigan Medicine offers a comprehensive program and a care team that includes surgeons, physician assistants, registered dietitians, neuropsychologists, endocrinologists, and nurses — all specifically trained in bariatric surgery — to work with and support patients through the entire process.
Lifelong follow-up is offered to all Michigan Medicine bariatric patients. The program is run by endocrinologists and supported by registered dietitians. Patients are provided with nutritional, metabolic, vitamin/mineral, and weight support. Complication screening and management occurs for issues including post-bariatric hypoglycemia, vitamin deficiencies, common gastrointestinal issues, and weight control issues. The program serves as the only tertiary referral program in the state of Michigan to support qualifying patients who had surgery performed outside Michigan Medicine.
Gastroenterologists with expertise in advanced endoscopic bariatric therapy evaluate and treat patients. Patients have the option of primary EBT (e.g. endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty) and/or secondary EBT (e.g. transoral gastric outlet reduction) depending on the clinical situation.
Run by Preventative Cardiology, the program combines exercise, nutrition, stress management and strategies for behavior change in a supportive group atmosphere to facilitate positive lifestyle changes, which in turn reduces risk. The 24-week program includes weekly meetings via Zoom for lectures, group discussions and exercise allowing for participation from home.
Patients suspected to have an atypical form of obesity can be evaluated by a specialized endocrinologist. Atypical forms could include: lipodystrophy, syndrome monogenic obesity, or non-syndromic monogenic obesity. Assessment may include hormonal evaluation and/or genetic evaluation.
Registered dietitians provide support and structure for our patients. Involvement can be independent, through primary care, and/or through a specialty program. Depending on the service/program, expertise is available for facilitation of: very-low calorie diets (VLCD), meal replacement, very low carbohydrate diets, Mediterranean diets, and diets to match certain clinical needs.
