As the Director of the Obesity Medicine Fellowship at the University of Michigan, I am thrilled to welcome prospective applicants who are passionate about advancing the science and practice of obesity medicine and optimizing care for individuals living with obesity.
I am a Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Diabetes and a Research Professor in Nutritional Sciences in the School of Public Health. My clinical and research expertise lies in obesity and type 2 diabetes, with a focus on clinical care, care delivery models, health outcomes, healthcare costs, and cost-effective interventions. I direct a clinical research program of intensive behavioral therapy. I serve as a Core Director of both the NIH-funded Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center and the Michigan Diabetes Research Center.
Our fellowship is rooted in a deep commitment to excellence, equity, and innovation. We offer a rich, interdisciplinary training environment that combines personalized mentorship with robust clinical and academic experiences. Fellows benefit from comprehensive rotations in endocrinology, bariatric surgery, nutrition, behavioral health, pediatrics, and primary care obesity management—each providing invaluable insights into the complexity of obesity as a chronic disease.
At Michigan, you’ll be part of a vibrant academic community with access to national thought leaders, cutting-edge research, and a culture that fosters inquiry, collaboration, and continuous learning. Our goal is to prepare fellows not only to deliver expert, compassionate care but also to emerge as future leaders, educators, and advocates in the field of obesity medicine.
Whether your interests lie in clinical care, academic medicine, public health, or research, our program provides the foundation, flexibility, and support to help you thrive. We are excited about the future of obesity medicine and invite you to explore how your aspirations align with the mission and values of the University of Michigan.
