Federal Law defines five groups in the U.S. that are responsible for making and regulating medication waste safely and proper sanitary removal processes, but most tasks are held responsible at the state level for each of their own, organizations and or health care facilitys are responsible for holding standards up to both federal and state laws.
Title 49, Part 173 reviews and outlines distinct regulations to ensure the safe handling of health care waste as it is transported and disposed of to prevent any injuries or accidents from occuring and to protect the general overall public health and safety of all communities as seen on a national level.
The five groups in the U.S.:
OSHA or Occupation Safety and Health Administration
EPA or Enviormental Protection Agency
DOT or Department of Transportation
DEA or Drug Enforcement Agency
RCRA or Resource Converstion and Recovery Act this act works to provide regualations and guidelines of the EPA specifically when it applies to harzardous waste material.

Michigan Law defines the Public Health Code that protects the public health and safety and aims at prevention of disease and disability.
