Wesley Kerr, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh who is mentored remotely by Dr. Stacey and others in his group. Dr. Kerr also contributes to work in Dr. Stacey’s group, especially around the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Dr. Kerr’s research group at the University of Pittsburgh focuses on assisting clinicians, including himself, in making better decisions with data. His NINDS K23 focuses on using machine learning applied to the electronic health record to improve the early identification of patients with functional (nonepileptic) seizures who were being treated for epileptic seizures. He also has interests in using real-world data to measure the impact of treatments for seizures on mortality, healthcare resource utilization, and other seizure and non-seizure outcomes. His other work focuses on using data to improve the design and analysis of clinical trials for epilepsy, including implementation of Time to Event designs like the Time to Prerandomization monthly Seizure Count (T-PSC) design, and optimizing inclusion/exclusion criteria to address current challenges in recruitment and statistical power.
