Community-Coordinated Preventative Screenings Program
What does CCPS do?
CCPS hosts preventative health screenings in Washtenaw County, MI for those who are underinsured or have no insurance. The committee works with two local organizations, the Robert J. Delonis Center and the Maize and Blue Cupboard, to screen individuals in the community at no cost to them. Screenings include blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, hemoglobin, blood oxygen saturation, and heart rate tests. Other committee activities include administering surveys at our partner facilities, working on health literacy initiatives, and distributing health supplies.
How do these screenings make a difference?
Early Detection and Treatment: Screenings can identify health conditions like diabetes and hypertension early on and, in some cases, before symptoms arise. Early detection enables earlier treatment, which often leads to better outcomes, improved quality of life, and lower mortality rates.
Preventive Care: Public screenings for conditions like high blood pressure or blood sugar levels encourage preventive care. When individuals become aware of potential risk factors early, they can make lifestyle adjustments, explore appropriate treatments, and prevent the progression of illnesses.
Cost Savings: Early diagnosis through public screening can reduce healthcare costs by preventing the need for expensive, late-stage treatments and hospitalizations. This financial benefit extends to both individuals and healthcare systems, making resources more available for broader community use.
Awareness and Education: Screening programs often include education on health risks and healthy practices, empowering people to make informed decisions. Providing a community-level awareness promotes a culture of health consciousness, encouraging more proactive attitudes toward health.
Addressing Health Disparities: Accessible screening programs help bridge health disparities, especially in under-resourced areas. They ensure that vulnerable populations receive high-quality, early diagnostic opportunities.
