Social justice concepts of intersectionality, social identity, power, and privilege don't come up in daily conversations. For people who are not familiar with these terms, it can be very intimidating to participate in dialogues on these topics.
This project is purposefully designed to tackle this problem. We want to raise awareness on these issues, support diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, and contribute to enhancing dialogues within the current campus climate.
Furthermore, this project highlights the experiences of students that the majority may not have exposure to - this campus is over 65% white, and people of color only make up 35% of the population. Upper class students make up 75% of the population, while only 3.6% of the population come from the bottom 20% in terms of family income. These statistics are horrifying and we believe it is important for students who hold privilege to recognize that their peers have vastly different experiences on campus.
