Scenario Simulation

Simulated real vehicle-to-VRU crashes (from FARS dataset) and risk-prone encounters (from NDS dataset) in the United States: High-fidelity scenarios are generated using RoadRunner. The scenarios are then described in ASAM OpenX standards for further simulation using OpenPASS under varying conditions.

This video was generated by RoadRunner.

Crash Context Description Tool (Demo)

A web-based tool developed using Shiny to explore VRU-related crashes in the United States. It allows users to extract a subset of VRU-related crash data by applying multiple filters to nearly all data elements listed in CRSS/FARS. The primary function of this tool is to provide real-time contextual information regarding the driver, the VRU, the vehicle, and the environment of any selected subset of crashes of interest. Additionally, the tool is equipped with features for data exploration, downloads, and visualization. We hope that users will find the tool helpful and gain a deeper understanding of the context of vehicle-VRU interactions in crash scenarios.

Layout of the "CRSS" tab with data tables generated for "Type of vehicle = light vehicle" and "Type of VRU = Pedestrians", temporarily filtered by "Intersection" in the "Relation to Junction" column of the crash table; "FARS" tab shares a similar layout.

Layout of the "Graph tool" tab, with a bar chart created for "Relation to Junction" in CRSS, grouped by year and presented with dodged bar positions (“Year (dodged)”) ordered by frequency.

Layout of the "Graph tool" tab, with a bar chart created for "Relation to Junction" in CRSS, grouped by number of 1s (as for the six determing factors for corner cases) and presented with filled bar positions (“Number of 1s (filled)”).
