Principal Investigator

Shan Bao

Dr. Bao is an Associate Professor in the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Department, University of Michigan-Dearborn, with a joint appointment as Associate Research Scientist in the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute’s Human Factors Group. She is also an affiliated faculty member with UM Civil and Environmental Engineering department, MIDAS and UM Robotics Institute. Dr. Bao received her Ph.D. in mechanical and industrial engineering from the University of Iowa in 2009. 

Her research interests focus on human factors issues related to connected and automated vehicle technologies, ADAS system evaluation, and big data analysis.  She has served as the PI or co-PI of 54 research projects. She has published 72 technical publications, including 40 referred journals articles. Shan is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and has served as the chair of the Surface Transportation Technical Group of Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.  She is a also member of the TRB Vehicle User Characteristics committee and the TRB Human Factors in Road Vehicle Automation subcommittee.  

Postdoctoral Researcher

Huizhong Guo

Dr. Huizhong Guo is a Postdoctoral researcher at the UMTRI’s Human Factors Group. She received her PhD in Civil Engineering and MS in Statistics from the University of Washington in 2021. 

Her research focuses on driver behavior and its implication on transportation safety from the perspective of e.g., driving style, driver distraction and pedestrian safety. She has extensive experience working with naturalistic driving data and laboratory data through statistical and machine learning methods.

Ph.D. Students

Dania Ammar

is a Ph.D. candidate in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Research work & interests include:

Currently, my studies focus on investigating the interaction between VRUs and AVs and identifying user needs to design and test a user-interface (UI) prototype in addition to the analysis and the modeling of drivers' behavior and VRUs' crash data.

Zifei Wang

is a Ph.D. candidate in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

My research interests are in the field of human factors and automated vehicle technologies, including driver behavior analysis, advanced driver assistant system studies, and other topics. Currently, my studies focus on implementing data analysis and machine learning techniques to analyze micro-mobility crashes and improve road safety.

Golnoosh Garakani

is a Ph.D. candidate in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Her research interests are on human factors and automated vehicle technologies. Her current focus is on connected and automated vehicles data analysis using machine-learning techniques to understand how drivers interact with automated systems and explain/communicate automated system decisions.
