FOPS 2026 is the 10th conference in the series and will be held in the picturesque Mad River Valley region of Vermont – the “Green Mountain State.” This scenic rural area is known for its stunning natural beauty, wide range of outdoor activities, and charming New England towns. In summer, activities include hiking, mountain biking, and exploring nearby Waitsfield and Warren that offer local shops, restaurants, and cultural experiences.
Previous meetings have been held in other alpine regions, such as the Chugach, Cascades, Rockies or southern Appalachians, as well as in maritime/island regions, such as Kodiak or Newfoundland. This is the first time FOPS has been held in northern Appalachia. It is anticipated that the combination of easy access from Burlington International Airport, plus the seclusion of the Sugarbush Resort, results in a vibrant, yet relaxing meeting.
The FOPS conference was started in 2001 with emphasis on open and vigorous discussion of current results and future directions. In addition to technical oral presentations, there will be panel discussions, generous poster sessions, communal breakfast, lunch and breaks, and free time for social and intellectual engagement.
Fundamental optical processes in semiconductors are central to basic science and applications in optoelectronics and photonics. Such optical processes offer a probe of the behavior in novel semiconductors and their heterostructures, provide methods to control electrodynamic processes for classical or quantum device functionality, and are platforms to develop cross-cutting theoretical concepts for semiconductor optics and beyond.
Consequently, the FOPS 2026 meeting is open to all topics that relate to the fundamental optical processes in semiconductors from theory and growth to characterization and application.
