Justin Wong (CS ’25 / DS ’26)
Hello EGL Community!
I hope this Fall has treated you and your loved ones well. For those I haven’t met, my name is Justin Wong. After serving as Alumni Chair last year, I’m excited to now write to you as the External Vice President for the EGL Student Society.
17 EGLs concluded their Tauber summer projects with exceptional success, contributing across 10 projects in 9 cities nationwide. For many, the experience was transformative, as they had the opportunity to apply their engineering and business skills in high-impact settings while growing as leaders. EGLs made their mark across many different industries, taking on meaningful responsibilities and driving results within their teams. At Spotlight!, they delivered impressive performances: Boeing (Keiran Boerema and Reese Liebman) and Navitas (Ashton Jaffar and Max West) earned third place, while Emerson (Maya Mileski) secured second. In total, EGL students received 4 of the 7 available scholarships, continuing the program’s proud tradition of excellence.
Our Volunteer Abroad Program continues to grow as we had yet another record year, with four trips to Grenada, Thailand, Montana (a repeat trip from 2022), and Peru. 55 EGL students once again embodied the program’s spirit of community service and global awareness. We continued the reflective elements of nightly journaling and a post-trip debrief to help students translate their experiences into lasting personal growth. In addition to creating trip videos and blog posts, we expanded our storytelling through Instagram stories to share a behind-the-scenes look at daily life on the trips. Participants remained deeply engaged throughout, forming lasting friendships and experiences that have evidently strengthened the sense of community on campus this fall.
This summer, we hosted two wonderful alumni meet-ups in New York City and Chicago. In New York, alumni and students gathered for a sunny picnic in Central Park, while the Chicago group enjoyed an evening of great food and conversation over dinner. Speaking of Chicago, our annual Chicago Trip took place early this year from September 18–20. Fifty-seven EGLs spent the weekend exploring career opportunities and reconnecting with alumni, including a visit to McKinsey and to our very own Katie Bevier at Home Chef. We capped off the trip with a lively alumni dinner at Ranalli’s in Lincoln Park, where 13 alumni joined us to share stories, advice, and plenty of laughter.
At the start of the fall semester, we welcomed 8 new students to EGL, each eager to dive into the community and get involved. We kicked things off with our New Admit Orientation, followed by the annual Welcome Back BBQ, where everyone enjoyed Canes, conversation, and a house so packed it could’ve counted as a team-building exercise. Even with the tight quarters, it was great to see just how many people turned out to reconnect after the summer. With winter traditionally bringing a larger incoming class, we’re looking forward to welcoming even more new EGLs in January. It’s exciting to see how quickly our community continues to grow!
The EGL community, both on campus and beyond, continues to inspire me to give my best to this program. The unwavering support of our alumni plays a vital role in sustaining EGL’s growth and ensuring that current students can learn, lead, and make an impact both locally and globally. I’ve often reflected on how different my college experience and career path might have been had I not found EGL. The friendships I’ve built, the professional growth I’ve gained, and the unforgettable experiences I’ve had through this community have shaped who I am today. None of it would have been possible without the dedication and generosity of our alumni, and we strive every day to honor your legacy by upholding the core values that define EGL.
As we look toward the end of the year, we’ll be kicking off our annual Fall Alumni Campaign, a time to celebrate and continue the tradition of alumni generosity that keeps EGL thriving. Your support directly fuels the hands-on projects, global experiences, and professional opportunities that define the student experience. We’re deeply grateful for every conversation, piece of advice, and contribution you share with us. If you’d like to hear more about student initiatives or explore ways to get involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at EGL.External.VP@umich.edu. I would love to connect!
Sincerely,
Justin Wong

This August, 55 EGL students participated in our annual VA trips by volunteering throughout Montana, Thailand, Grenada, and Peru in partnership with incredible organizations to make a global impact. In Montana, we continued our partnership with the Blackfeet Indian Nation on community development projects. The Thailand group supported elephant welfare and education at Burm and Emily’s Elephant Sanctuary. Those in Grenada worked with Caribbean Reef Buddy on coral restoration and marine conservation. And in Peru, our group collaborated with Hoja Nueva on research, sustainability, and conservation in the Amazon.
Read more about each trip below, or explore the VA Trip videos and the VA Blogs page to learn about the students’ first-hand, day-to-day experiences!
Chiang Mai, Thailand
The Thailand VA group posing with 2 roaming elephants at the Burm and Emily's Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai.
Sixteen EGLs kicked off their Thailand Volunteer Abroad experience on August 11th at Burm and Emily’s Elephant Sanctuary (BEES) in the lush valley of Mae Chaem. The passionate founders, Burm and Emily, have created BEES to be more than just a refuge for elephants, but also a safe place for the entire community. Volunteers learned about the sanctuary’s holistic mission: providing safe haven for retired elephants, rescuing stray animals, offering work opportunities for locals, and strengthening the local economy. Their first days were filled with travel and adventure, from exploring waterfalls and markets to preparing meals for elephants Thong Dee, Mae Kam, and Mae Dok.
Over the next several days, students immersed themselves in hands-on service and cultural work. They built new sandbeds for the elephants, repaired sanctuary roads, and cleared farming fields under the hot Thai sun. Each night, the group shared reflections on gratitude, culture, and teamwork, enjoying meaningful moments like jungle hikes, river swims, and bat cave explorations. The experience highlighted the balance of physical work and thoughtful learning, with lessons that extended far beyond the sanctuary.
The week wrapped up with powerful cultural exchanges, including teaching English at local elementary and high schools, teaching English to monks, learning about handwoven Thai textiles, and exploring Mae Chaem’s iconic rice terraces and waterfalls. The students discovered that service doesn’t only mean helping animals or building things; it’s also about listening, learning, and building human connections. By the end of their stay, the Thailand team left behind happier elephants, and with a deep appreciation for Thai culture and language.
Carriacou, Grenada
The Grenada VA group posing in wetsuits on the launch boat off the coast of Carricou after a full day of successful dives.
A group of 15 EGLs traveled to Carriacou, Grenada to volunteer with Caribbean Reef Buddy on important marine preservation and protection projects. Their experience began with an immersion into the Grenadian lifestyle, including local meals and early morning swims. They then dove into scuba certification and skill-building exercises, in preparation for coral reef restoration.
Throughout the week, they participated in numerous underwater tasks, working to clear invasive algae from damaged coral gardens and place cement “biscuits” to promote new coral growth. The group also learned about the ecological threat posed by invasive lionfish and took on efforts to control the lionfish population, such as spearfishing culling dives, which reduced the threat to native species and deepened their understanding of the challenges facing reef ecosystems.
The week demonstrated in action the transformative power of collective action and environmental responsibility. Facing unpredictable currents and challenging underwater environments, group members reflected on teamwork, adaptability, and the critical importance of environmental stewardship. The group’s impact extended beyond the immediate ecological benefits; they left with a greater sense of community, broadened worldviews, and a lasting sense of accomplishment in preserving the beauty and biodiversity of Carriacou’s reefs.
Browning, Montana
The Montana VA group pictured in front of a lake on the Blackfoot Indian reservation site.
Eight EGLs from the University of Michigan spent a transformative week volunteering on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning, Montana, focusing on community-driven projects and cultural exchange. Throughout the week, they helped out at the local food pantry to combat food insecurity and assisted with maintenance at public schools.
Each day brought unique opportunities to contribute and learn. EGLs assisted with food distribution, garden irrigation systems, furniture assembly, and renovations in key community spaces, such as schools and churches. These projects provided valuable lessons in the importance of sustainability and the challenges of long-term building maintenance. The presence and kindness of Browning’s residents, particularly those dedicated to essential community services, also left a lasting impression on the group.
Cultural exploration was woven into their experience, with evenings spent attending traditional Blackfeet ceremonies like the Pow Wow, learning the local history, and enjoying horseback rides across breathtaking landscapes. Stories shared by Blackfeet community members, both celebratory and somber, sparked thoughtful reflection among the EGLs, deepening their understanding of indigenous resilience in the face of historical adversity.
By engaging directly with the community and forming meaningful connections, the EGLs gained invaluable insights into service, leadership, and cultural humility. Their week in Browning reinforced the importance of approaching volunteer work with empathy and openness, and they brought home a strengthened commitment to respectful partnership and lifelong learning.
Madre De Dios, Amazon Rainforest, Peru
Peru VA group poses with the vine balls they made to support the enrichment of wildcats undergoing rehabilitation at the Hoja Nueva Rewilding Center.
Seventeen EGL students arrived in Madre de Dios, Peru on August 11th to volunteer with Hoja Nueva, an environmental conservation and sustainability organization focused on rewilding, research, and preservation in the Amazon Rainforest. Nestled deep in the jungle alongside the Las Piedras River and just north of Puerto Maldonado, Hoja Nueva’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and reintroduce native wildlife, particularly carnivores like jaguars and ocelots, back to their natural habitats.
The EGL team quickly adapted to the vibrant, but harsh, environment, and engaged in a variety of impactful projects: collecting food and supplies for rescued animals, assisting with camera trap wildlife surveys, and supplementing the sanctuary’s natural re-wilding enclosures. They accompanied different field experts on morning and night surveys for frogs, caimans, birds, and more, and had the opportunity to learn about each expert’s research in this region of the Amazon. The group also learned about the delicate balance of Amazonian ecosystems through activities ranging from sustainable agroforestry projects that balance profitability for farmers with sustainable growth initiatives, to first-hand exposure to the complexities of re-integrating animals that have been wrongfully domesticated or trafficked back into the wild. The students embraced the jungle lifestyle, reflecting on the challenges and rewards of protecting such a biodiverse, but unforgiving environment. They were able to experience cultural exchanges with nearby village children and with other interns on field placements, playing volleyball and swimming on the riverbanks, further deepening their connection to the place and its people.
Hoja Nueva’s commitment to minimizing human impact was clear: their local advocacy and strict rehabilitation protocols ensure animals destined for release maintain their wild behaviors, while research informs conservation strategies tailored to preserve this unique ecosystem. As the week closed, the EGL team felt inspired by the passion and perseverance of the local staff, the complexity of the ecosystem, and the knowledge that their work contributes to a global effort to preserve the Amazon’s rich biodiversity for generations to come.
VA Student Spotlight - Luciana Millan
“VA was such an eye-opening experience! It allowed me to connect with other EGL students while also giving me space to reflect and feel part of something bigger than myself. As a new admit, it was especially meaningful to meet students in older grades and build relationships with them. Hearing about their experiences, whether it was about past VAs, classes, or Tauber projects, made me even more excited to be part of a program that truly values connection and community.” - Luciana Millan, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering BSE, Class of 2028

"One of the most impactful parts of Engineering Global Leadership is the alumni network. While at Michigan, we focus on the strong relationships we make with our peers and continue those once we graduate. But when you graduate, you might also find yourself in a new part of the country or world, starting a new job, with less access to your EGL friends. The EGL network is vast and welcoming, and I experienced that this summer when planning the EGL Alumni Summer Meetup in NYC.
Having moved to the area last year, it was my first time meeting up with other EGLs in the city, and I had a blast. We chose to enjoy a beautiful day out in central park with a potluck picnic, complete with charcuterie, chips & guac, and some delicious fruit! I'm excited to continue connecting with EGL alumni as I explore New York and the surrounding areas and look forward to next year's summer meetup (but am also looking into some options before then)!" - Jayanth Tatikonda, AAB NYC Geographical Lead, Class of 2024
The 32nd annual Tauber Spotlight! competition was held on September 12, 2025, which featured a few new initiatives! Most remarkably, a new pilot capstone project track with “Stage 2” (Post-Startup) companies launched, including collaborations with Fark Labs and KROMATID. This year, 24 senior executive judges from a variety of industries evaluated the projects and awarded over $35,000 in scholarships. Joel Tauber, Institute benefactor, announced the winners and spoke about the essence of building strong relationships and giving back as key to leading a fulfilling life and career.

“Our project focused on making several operational improvements throughout Emerson's warehouse to create efficient processes, increase data visibility/KPI tracking, and structure the replenishment of high-running parts. Our team worked directly with warehouse staff to identify challenges in the workplace and create long-lasting, feasible solutions. It was very rewarding to see our ideas fully implemented by the end of the summer!” - Maya Mileski, Emerson - Material Movement and Warehouse Transformation (2nd Place at Spotlight!)
“Looking back on my Tauber experience, it’s crazy to remember how overwhelming everything felt beforehand with the scope, expectations, and just figuring out where to begin. My biggest takeaway was how important communication is, not just with your team, but across the company. Everyone sees problems in a different way, and the best way we found to make an impact was to listen and understand from their perspectives. The project felt impossible at first, but once we talked with everyone from operators to management, it made a lot more sense. Seeing our work come together to impact the people at Navitas, and placing third at Spotlight with Max, was extremely rewarding.” - Ashton Jaffar, Navitas Systems (3rd Place at Spotlight!)
