COVID-19 Effects on Mobility and Transportation

(Worldwide and United States)

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound effect on the daily activities and mobility of the worldwide population. As personal social distancing measures and government strategies to “flatten the curve” take place, mobility capabilities have been widely and significantly affected.

In this work, we create visualizations of daily changes in mobility of different activities, time series analysis and predictive analysis for the mobility behavior in different countries of the world and in different states/counties in the United States. These analysis are based on Google’s COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports [1]. Six different mobility activities are included in our dashboards: grocery and pharmacy, residential, retail, workplaces, parks and transit stations.

The percentage of change is based on the baseline mobility registered from January 3 to February 6 2020. For the country analysis dashboard, confirmed cases and deaths data are obtained from the Johns Hopkins University Github COVID-19 Data Repository from the Center for Systems Science and Engineering [2]. Dashboards are updated every Friday at 11 PM US Eastern Time.

For the following two dashboards you will be presented with reports with two graphics: the left graphic shows the daily time series for the selected regions and the span will be the selected data range. The right graphic maps the location of the selected regions in a color scheme to compare the average change in mobility of the selected date range.

Dashboard #1 below is a visualization of the changes in mobility in the United States. The first report has information aggregated by state and the second one by county. (To select which report to show, please click on the bottom left.) To properly visualize county locations, please expand the view of the page.

With the select states/counties drop down menu you can select states of interest.

With the date option you can select the start and end dates to be displayed.

Dashboard #2 below is a visualization of the changes in the mobility of the world and by continents. The first report visualizes the worldwide changes in mobility aggregated by country and the rest reports visualize changes by each continent. Therefore, all the reports cover the following regions:

  • Worldwide

  • North and Central America

  • South America

  • Africa

  • Asia

  • Europe

  • Oceania

To select which report to show, please click on the bottom left.

With the select countries drop down menu you can select countries of interest.

With the date option you can select the start and end dates to be displayed.

Dashboard #3 below is a visualization of the changes in mobility regarding several activities with the addition of horizontal reference lines that mark relevant events that have affected the mobility patterns of the country. In addition, a normalized daily increase of confirmed cases and deaths by COVID-19 for the country is included. All the reports cover the following eight countries for analysis:

  • United States

  • Mexico

  • Colombia

  • Brazil

  • Italy

  • South Africa

  • India

  • South Korea
