About

The Community of Physicists for Inclusion and Equity (CoPhIE), formerly Society for Women in Physics (SWIP), was founded in 2002 by a group of undergraduate students at the University of Michigan (UM). Current membership includes undergraduates, graduates and post-doctoral fellows across multiple departments, including Physics, Applied Physics, Biophysics, and Astronomy. Past faculty involved with SWIP have been Prof. Hui Deng, Prof. Jennifer Ogilvie, Prof. Timothy McKay, Prof.  Xiaoming Mao, Prof. Christine Aidala, Prof. Rachel Goldman, and Dr. Monica Tecchio, Prof.  Liuyan Zhao . The current CoPhIE faculty advisor is Prof. Christine Aidala (2022-2023).

CoPhIE represents an outstanding team effort, bringing together women in physics-related disciplines at the University of Michigan.  The society provides a unique opportunity to develop leadership and organizational skills. The main goals of CoPhIE are networking, mentorship, outreach, education, and leadership.

Here are CoPhIE's Constitution and Code of Conduct.

Meet Our Executive Board Members:

Gabriela Fernandes Martins

5th Year Physics Ph.D. Candidate | Executive Board 2023-Present

Gabriela is a 5th-year Physics Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan. She is originally from Brazil, where she obtained a B.S. and M.S. in Physics from the University of São Paulo, researching applications of superconducting qubits to quantum thermodynamics. Now her research is focused on theoretical biophysics, in specific to investigating how noise affects the function of living systems.

Andrea Londono

5th Year Applied Physics Ph.D. Candidate | Executive Board 2024-Present

Max Jerdee

5th Year Physics Ph.D. Candidate | Executive Board 2024-Present

Loki Lin

2nd Year Physics Ph.D. Candidate | Executive Board 2024-Present

PC: Marguerite Courtney

Ruiqi Tang

Executive Board 2024-Present | 4th year Undergrad

Ruiqi is a 4th-year undergrad who transferred from China. She majors in Physics, and Women's and Gender Studies. She can't live without air, water, tasty food, and karate. She also likes painting, drawing, baking, and learning languages.

Haley Gibson

Executive Board 2023-Present | 4th year Undergrad

Haley is a rising Senior studying physics, mathematical physics, and German. In her free time, she likes to be outdoors as much as possible. She enjoys swimming and hiking when she visits her parents in Colorado during the summer. Fun fact: she studied classical piano for almost ten years, before deciding to major in physics in college. She loves all different genres of music, and is always looking for new music recommendations.

Sarahí Palma

Executive Board 2023-Present | 3rd year Undergrad | LinkedIn | GitHub

Sarahi is an Astronomy and Astrophysics student at the University of Michigan. She is currently doing research on the vertical composition of exoplanet atmospheres and hopes to go to graduate school for astrobiology. Being the child of immigrants from Latin America, she has always noticed the discrepancies in STEM with DEI and hopes to help others feel less alone in STEM.

2022-2024 Board Members:

Claire Arneson

6th Year Physics Ph.D. Candidate | arnesoce [at] umich [dot] edu

Claire is a 6th-year Physics Ph.D. studying organic electronic devices, including light-emitting diodes and photovoltaics. Claire is passionate about increasing access to science education and research; her activism focuses primarily on the avenues of equity in graduate education and housing access. When not in the lab, Claire enjoys running, skiing, doing crossword puzzles while drinking coffee, and experimenting with new hobbies. Her newest experiment is attempting to knit a sock.

Cynthia Nuñez

6th Year Physics Ph.D. Candidate | cnune [at] umich [dot] edu

Cynthia is a 6th-year Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan. She earned her M.S. in Physics from the University of Michigan in 2020 and her B.S. in Physics with an astronomy minor and a track in physics education (along with teaching certifications for the state of Florida) from Florida International University in 2018. Her research interests are focused on high-energy particle and nuclear experiments, where she has worked on studying spin in quantum chromodynamics and is part of the Large Hadron Collider beauty experiment. Originally born in Santa Clara, Cuba, Cynthia enjoys dancing, gardening, cooking, and exploring the dynamic world with her two-year-old daughter.

Nora Sherman

6th Year Physics Ph.D. Candidate | norafs [at] umich [dot] edu
