Intersectionality is a useful tool in deconstructing and understanding discrimination and representation in the media, popular culture and politics. In this workshop, we will engage in discussion with students to identify examples of intersectionality in the media, popular culture, and politics. Drawing from current socio-political events, social media, and podcasts, such as Intersectionality Matters! we will critically consider the implications and applications of intersectionality. Finally, we will utilize our first meeting to gauge participants’ interests to guide the following year’s topics/themes and readings, as well as subgroup topic interests. We will provide some time for students with common interests to discuss these briefly in small groups.
In this session, we utilized examples from two immigration-related videos to examine and understand intersectionality concepts. We also engaged in discourse on how the Domains of Power are manifested in everyday politics, through an analysis of the following two videos. The worksheet below is a great framework of guiding questions to help us dive into intersectionality and examine our own perceptions.
