Because college isn’t just about classes (thank goodness)
Getting involved on campus is one of the best ways to make Michigan feel smaller, more personal, and a whole lot more fun. Whether you’re looking to explore a passion, build your resume, meet new people, or just try something new for the sake of it, there’s a club or org here for you. Actually, there are hundreds.
This section walks you through how to find clubs, how to actually get into them (because let’s be real, some are more intense than others), and how to reach out to people who are already involved. I’ll explain how to use tools like Maize Pages and what to expect at Festifall,
I’ve also included some of my own experiences joining clubs and the impact they’ve had on my time at Michigan. Whether you’re super outgoing or a little nervous about putting yourself out there, I promise: getting involved can completely change your college experience for the better.
Maize Pages
Maize Pages is the University of Michigan’s official online platform for student involvement, serving as a comprehensive directory for over 1,700 student organizations across various interests, including academic, cultural, service, and recreational groups . It allows students to explore and join organizations, discover campus events, and manage their involvement. Check out the Maize Pages for information about clubs you are thinking about joining! Festifall
Festifall is basically a huge student org fair that happens at the start of the school year at Michigan. It’s your chance to walk around, check out hundreds of clubs, grab some free stuff, and sign up for anything that sounds fun or interesting. Whether you're into sports, community service, arts, cultural groups, or totally random hobbies, there’s probably a club for it, and they’ll all be out there trying to recruit new members. It’s a great way to meet people and find your thing on campus. Festifall is held in the Diag at the beginning of every year. It is absolutely going to be overwhelming, but just try to walk around for at least 45 minutes!
On-Campus Internships
There are tons of internships available on campus! I would say that internship experiences should definitely align more with your career goals, rather than just things your enjoy. Use them to learn tons and beef up that resume! There are many different types of internships with varying time commitments. I would recommend searching on LinkedIn or chatting with people in your major to learn more about on-campus internships that could benefit you.
Other
Another great way to get involved is to learn about clubs that have to do with your major! I know as a Sport Management major, there are so many clubs you can join relating to sports. Also - you do not have to be a Sport Management major to be involved in them! For most clubs, there is no major/minor/academic requirement to be involved! I know tons of non-Sport Management majors that are in clubs like Sports Business Association or Michigan Sport Business Conference (just to name a few). If you are a communications major interested in biology, look on the biology major website or check out maize pages! If you are an education major interested in coding, check out the computer science website or maize pages! Find whatever interests you and make it happen!
Another way to find things that interest you is on LinkedIn. Search up different clubs or organizations and connect with people who are a part of them! Send them a message like "I say you were in *insert club here*! I am super interested and would love to learn more and hear about your experience and involvement!"
My Experience
Funny enough, I actually was not in any clubs at Michigan. I was a Student Manager for the Michigan Men's Basketball Team! This took up A LOT of my time, so I was not able to join any clubs. However, it was an incredible experience! I was working every practice and lotsof games from freshman year all the way until my senior year. I want to work in the sports industry, so, for me, it was a great job to have!
