_______________________
Campus Preview Day
You likely will be unable to interview with every site you ranked, and we may ask you to interview with some you did not initially include. We have many great positions this year, and you might not have considered one that could be a fit for you!
If you are an undocumented or DACAmented student, please see here for additional information regarding employment on campus.
Please let each hiring team know as soon as possible if you have specific needs that would allow you to engage to your fullest during your interview.
After March 11
We ask that you finalize your decision regarding whether to matriculate into the CSHPE master’s program no later than April 15. You can do so via the Wolverine Access portal (wolverineaccess.umich.edu). The decision to matriculate indicates that you are no longer considering other academic programs and have chosen to be part of the 2022 CSHPE master’s cohort. If you have decided to attend a different graduate program, we wish you the best of luck. Please let us know as soon as you have made that decision so we can offer additional funding and internship opportunities to another student.
Internship sites will begin extending offers on Wednesday, March 16, and they will continue to do so for several weeks. The next steps in the internship placement process will be explained in greater detail soon after interviews. They are also available via the internship placement Google Site (see the additional menu on the main page).
Preparing for your Interviews
Please use the next several days to learn as much as you can about the internship sites with which you will be interviewing. Feel free to wear business casual attire for your interviews (i.e., you do not need to wear a suit). You may wish to practice in your interview space beforehand to ensure your internet connection is stable, lighting is adequate, etc. We recommend you consider sending thank you notes afterward via email.
Important Reminders
CSHPE internships provide valuable hands-on learning and an hourly salary. They do not provide a waiver for the cost of tuition or health insurance.
If you have interviews scheduled and your plans change for fall, please let both hiring teams and myself know. Because internship hiring teams are expecting to meet with you at the time you have scheduled next week, we will need to communicate that you are no longer participating in interviews.
We are excited to see many of you soon!
We are just a few days away from the Campus Preview Day in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education (CSHPE) at the University of Michigan. We are pleased that many of you have registered, and we look forward to meeting virtually this Friday, March 11, to share more about the School of Education and the master's program in Higher Education.
To access an agenda that includes Zoom links, please click below.
The Graduate Organization for Students in Higher Education (GOSHE) is planning a virtual social 2-4 p.m. ET this Saturday. If you have questions about this event, contact information for the MA GOSHE co-chairs is here. Zoom details are included on the agenda above.
If you are participating in internship placement, you should have received your interview schedule last Friday. At this time, please reach out to each hiring team on your schedule who you have not yet heard from, so that you can confirm your meeting time and Zoom links. Contact information for hiring teams is embedded in the internship descriptions.
______
Do you have financial questions?
We understand that finance is an important factor in the decision making process for many as you pursue your graduate studies. If you have questions related to funding, Eileen Brussolo has reserved 7-10 a.m. and 1-5 p.m. on Campus Preview Day, March 11, to meet with students admitted to CSHPE.
You can sign up for a virtual meeting using this link. Eileen also has availability for CSHPE students on March 14 and 15. Please do not reserve times on March 12, as these are for students considering the Educational Studies program.
______
As a final note, if you requested an email buddy and have not yet heard from them, please let me know so that I can help to facilitate this connection. CSHPE students are excited to meet you!
If you have any questions related to the admissions process, please don't hesitate to contact us at soeadmissions@umich.edu. For questions related to the internship placement, please contact Dr. Madden directly.
Tomorrow is the virtual Campus Preview Day for the Higher Education program at the University of Michigan. Zoom links for tomorrow morning's sessions are here.
If you are participating in internship interviews, by 11:59 p.m. ET this Monday, March 14, please rank the internships with which you interview, using the form linked below.
[Submit Post-Interview Rankings Here]
Details on how to submit your rankings after Campus Preview Day are outlined here (step 12). An overview of next steps in the internship placement after your interviews is explained here.
We look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow!
With the end of March near, we wish to be helpful in whatever way we can as you confirm whether Michigan is the right fit as your graduate program. If you have matriculated at Michigan, we look forward to seeing you this fall!
Matriculating at U-M
We ask that by April 15, you matriculate, or accept your offer of admission, via Wolverine Access. The decision to matriculate indicates you will enroll in courses at U-M in the fall. You should also plan to make a decision by this day regarding internship offers you have received.
CSHPE Internship
You can matriculate to attend U-M in the fall even if you are still seeking an internship. We will work with you to find a placement. Every year we have a group of well-qualified students who accept their offer of admission by April 15, and do not yet have their placement. If this is the case for you, we will continue to be in touch through spring and summer, when we have additional internships available.
A number of internship sites continue to extend offers! Please remember that if you receive an internship offer, it is important to confirm within two business days that you have received it. If you don't do this, the hiring team may assume you are no longer interested and move on to their next candidate.
Additional Funding Opportunities
Occasionally in the past, master's students in CSHPE have secured a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) role, which provides tuition remission and is posted through the U-M human resources website. These positions are competitive and often require specific background knowledge or expertise. You can apply for a GSI position through the U-M human resources site after you have matriculated at U-M. You should continue in the CSHPE internship placement, and inform us if you are asked to interview for a GSI role.
The application deadline for scholarships from the Center for the Education of Women, or CEW+, is April 1. These scholarships are available to individuals who have had a minimum five-year consecutive interruption in education anytime since high school, or are a primary caregiver. You need not identify as a woman to apply.
To discuss your federal financial aid package, please contact the Office of Financial Aid. You can also speak with Eileen Brussolo, School of Education Scholarship and Fellowship Manager, for additional guidance.
Housing Information
On-campus graduate housing information is available on the U-M Housing website here. In addition, you can learn about off-campus options at the Beyond the Diag website. If you'd like to connect with a current CSHPE student to discuss living in Ann Arbor, you can access the GOSHE co-chairs' contact information here.
We recognize that selecting a graduate school is an important and multifaceted decision. If you have any questions regarding the admissions process, please contact the School of Education Recruitment and Admissions team at soeadmissions@umich.edu. I remain the primary contact for items specific to internship placement, and would be happy to hear from you.
We're very happy you are considering the master's program in Higher Education at the University of Michigan -- and we hope to benefit from the many contributions you would make here!
I'm writing to share this recent good news about the School of Education and our graduate programs.
With warm regards,
Lisa

We wish you a pleasant Memorial Day weekend,
Katie Madden and Shannon Van Gundy
Good morning CSHPE students,
It was great to connect with those of you who were able to join us for the information session yesterday. If you were not able to attend, you can watch the recording here and access the slides here. Some important topics from our discussion are summarized below.
Fall Planning
One important highlight from the conversation is fall course planning. All incoming students should plan to take EDUC 561- Introduction to Higher Education and your required research course. Your research course options are EDUC 695 - Research and Educational Practice and EDUC 793 - Introduction to Quantitative Methods in Educational Research.
The returning students who joined us yesterday discussed their experiences with EDUC 695 and EDUC 793, so I would highly recommend watching the recording to hear a student perspective. Additionally, please be aware that EDUC 793 assumes prior experience with statistics, such as you would gain in an undergraduate or graduate statistics course, but it is not absolutely essential to success. Importantly, please note that EDUC 793 is a PhD-level course, though Dr. Bahr encourages research-interested students in our MA programs to consider taking the course. If you would like support in making this decision, please schedule an advising appointment.
Permissions
If courses you are attempting to register for require permission, please request permission through this form. Permissions will be granted to incoming students on a first-come, first-served basis while space is available. Note that these are processed by the registrar and are not automated, so there may be a delay between your request and when permission is granted (especially at the end of this week, as the registrar will be away from the office). If there are any issues with your request, you can expect to hear from me or the SOE Registrar via email regarding your request.
Advising Appointments
If you would like to meet one-on-one for an advising appointment, please schedule with me here. I look forward to talking one-on-one with many of you in the coming days and weeks! I highly encourage dual degree (confirmed or considering) and part-time students to meet with me early in your program.
Orientation
Please plan to attend CSHPE and SOE Orientation on August 24 and 25. Dr. Katie Madden will be sharing more information about orientation soon. If you anticipate any conflicts with orientation, please reach out to Katie at maddenk@umich.edu.
I hope that you have a wonderful rest of your week. I am excited to meet you in person in Ann Arbor soon!
Warmly,
Shannon
