The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a public historically black land-grant research university located in Princess Anne, Maryland, serving as the easternmost campus in the University System of Maryland. Founded in 1886 by leaders of the Delaware Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church as the Delaware Conference Academy on 16 acres to provide education for African Americans on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore, it evolved into a state-supported institution and joined the University System in 1988 while retaining its 1890 land-grant designation under the Morrill Act, emphasizing agricultural and mechanical education, research, and extension services. With a rural 1,100-acre campus UMES focuses on programs in agriculture, natural sciences, aviation, business, and education, maintaining a student-faculty ratio that supports its role as a doctoral research institution.
As one of 19 1890 land-grant HBCUs, it contributes to USDA-supported initiatives in food systems, rural development, and STEM, with unique programs like the first HBCU doctoral program in food science and comprehensive aviation training. The university's athletics compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, fostering student engagement through over 60 organizations, while its extension efforts address regional needs in sustainable agriculture and community resilience on the Delmarva Peninsula. -Grokipedia.com
