To guide the execution of our Grand Challenge, the SAIL Team operates under the following principles:
The mission of the Sensors and Advanced Instrumentation Laboratory is to advance scientific understanding by developing novel, integrated measurement systems and training a new generation of interdisciplinary Solution Architects.
Our vision is a future where complex environmental and biological systems are deeply understood through seamless, real-time data integration. SAIL will be a recognized leader in creating both the openly-architected tools and the expert innovators who make this future a reality.
Our strategy to achieve this vision is centered on the successful execution of the SAIL Grand Challenge. We will:
Focus our development on creating the Standard Holistic Integration Framework for Understanding (SHIFU) as a robust, openly-architected platform.
Systematically build out SHIFU's capabilities through modular, student-led projects that contribute directly to the core framework.
Validate our approach by applying the SHIFU platform to solve critical, real-world challenges in precision agriculture.
Disseminate our work through publications, presentations, and by making the SHIFU framework accessible to the broader scientific community, establishing it as a standard for integrated research.
