Foreword

The University of Maryland Extension (UME) Master Gardener (MG) Program has been teaching and demonstrating sustainable, science-based gardening and pest management practices since 1978. MGs are trained volunteer educators who share their knowledge and experience with individuals and communities across the state. They help carry out the University’s land-grant mission and achieve UME’s strategic goals.

We recognize that individuals have many different organizations that they can choose to donate their time, skills, and knowledge to. We are truly grateful that you have chosen the Master Gardener program! Our reach into the communities across Maryland is increased tremendously by the work of Master Gardener volunteers. We truly enjoy getting to learn and serve our communities with you. We appreciate the dedication and commitment displayed by Master Gardener volunteers.

This handbook contains policies, guidelines, and procedures for UME volunteers serving in the MG program. While specific program operations may vary slightly by county/city location, all must be in accordance with the policies and guidelines contained within this manual. It is also designed to provide support for volunteers by addressing the most frequently asked questions. This handbook will be updated as needed.

The staff of the State MG Office feel privileged to work with the dedicated faculty, staff, and volunteers of this exemplary program.
