The Human Development (HD) program at UMD is designed to support student learning about the mechanisms of growth and change across the lifespan.
Students will explore the biological, social, emotional, and cognitive processes of learning and development from conception to old age in diverse social and cultural contexts.
Earning a Bachelors of Science in Human Development will allow you to pursue careers and advanced degrees in fields such as education, law, medicine and other health-related fields, non-profit sectors, and human resources.
Courses cover a variety of topics on developmental theories, research and statistical methods, and special elective topics. Below are recent elective course offerings.
All HD majors gain valuable hands-on experience in research and applied settings through the Human Development Internship Program.
Our students have completed internships at 50+ unique sites that address the study of human development.
Our faculty are nationally recognized scholars in human development, developmental psychology, and educational psychology. Their work spans a wide range of topics that shape how children, adolescents, and adults learn, grown, and thrive.
