My first year of Arts Scholars was great – especially my second semester. In the first semester we learned about art’s purpose and created a piece of art that represented us. Second semester freshman don’t have colloquium, but rather an intimate workshop of their choosing. I was in Gracie Morgan’s “Craftivism” workshop, where we learned how crafts such as cross stitch, embroidery, quilting, and crochet can be used as a tool for sending messages. I had such a great time learning these new skills and truly believe that I have new, lifelong hobbies. My friends call me a grandmother because of my new inclination to stay in on a Friday night to cross stitch, embroider flowers onto my jeans, or crochet a cozy for my potted fern, but I am very happy with my choices!
Developing relationships with faculty is so important. One of my greatest successes was keeping in touch with my ENGL101 professor, since he believed I was a great writer and that my final paper should be published. Because of this, I was able to ask him to write me a letter of recommendation for scholarships this Spring! This should be something that incoming freshmen keep in mind. Going to office hours is crucial for building relationships. As for Arts Scholars faculty, it is easy to love Heather and Harold. I would advise, though, furthering communication with them more than what is required. I know from speaking with Sophomores that next year will be a lot of working with them on Capstone Projects, so this will help a lot!
I have used my artistic interests to make connections with other students by taking non-major dance courses. I have met some great people by bonding over similar interests! As for friends in general, this is truly crucial for having a fun time in college. It is really hard, though. I didn’t have success making friends in classes; I honestly made good friends because my roommate is super social. I would definitely recommend, if this isn’t the case for you, going to the many, many campus and scholars events held on campus.
Arts Scholars events include Craft & Chats that cover a vast array of mediums, and awesome field trips. It definitely fosters a community of people who advocate for the arts, which is always so nice to see. I am always in awe of the talent of my peers, so events like ArtsFest are really cool to attend. ArtsFest is the spring presentation of all workshop and Capstone projects. I am excited to contribute to this event with my future Capstone project.
My understanding of art in society has changed during our first semester conversation of, “what is art?” I discovered mediums that I would have never before, like our vogue dancing workshop, and I greater appreciate the diversity in this regard. In my own life, I am most thankful for the new crafting hobbies I mentioned. I will prioritize creativity for the rest of my life, and I do believe Art Scholars pushed me to come to this conclusion. Future Art Scholars will have a new sense of art when leaving, because of being able to see it up-front. To get the most out of the program, attend events, be accountable about field trip and workshop sign ups, and mingle with peers!
