The Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) provides a wide range of information and services to international students and scholars including:
Assistance with the process of applying to Maryland.
Orientation services for international students.
Counseling for students on immigration concerns, financial problems, and cross-cultural issues.
Assistance to departments in obtaining appropriate visas for visiting scholars and faculty members.
Assistance to American and international students interested in studying outside the U.S.
Once admitted to the University the ISSS will contact you via email with instructions to log into UMD’s iTerp system. Information and steps for studying with F1/J1 status can be found on ISSS website. Newly admitted students can reach the pre-arrival team via chat with an ISSS advisor.
The Maryland English Institute (MEI) provides programs and courses for non-native speakers of English. MEI also offers a variety of part-time non-credit courses, customized programs for special purposes, and evaluation of the English language proficiency for international students and international teaching assistants.
Admission letters for some students specify that they will be required to take a placement test through the Maryland English Institute (MEI). Students can visit the MEI website for more information about the placement test. Students can submit additional TOEFL/IELTS scores up until August 1. If you have specific questions about your provisional admission status, you should contact the Graduate School.
The SID number is separate from your UID number. Your SID is located in your Admissions Letter and the Enrollment Form in your TerpEngage Application.
