"Survival without Oxygen; Insights from the Zebrafish"
Oxygen is necessary for the production of ATP, and without it many organisms die because they stop producing ATP, yet continue to consume it. Zebrafish tolerate environments in which oxygen is absent by arresting developmental progression or physiological activity of vital organs, and this is thought to be brought about by lowering demand for ATP. Our lab aims to identify conserved signaling pathways through which this arrest occurs with the goal of providing new information towards therapy to reduce hypoxia-related injuries.
