Tensegrity structures are composed of struts and cables with a high strength-to-mass ratio, which leads to strong and lightweight structural design in civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering. The self-stress state in tensioned and compressed elements provides the stability of a tensegrity structure.
Persistence: Being on this team and working on this project has helped me to be persistent in always putting my best efforts into the team’s success.
Realistic Vision: The biggest constraint in this project is the project’s timeline. The team and I worked hard to make sure that we put in our best efforts but were realistic in understanding that certain ideas could not be considered because of time constraints.
Express ideas in an organized, clear, concise, and accurate manner: One of the required documents for this project is the System Requirements Specification document to be provided to the client. This document includes the objective of the project, the Functional block diagram, the Mission Scenario diagram, the System Boundary diagram, and a table of the requirements for the device.
Write clearly and effectively: The success of this project required me to communicate clearly when communicating with the team, client, and professors.
Effectively connect multiple ideas and approaches: This project required a solid understanding of our client’s research, machine design, Vibrations, Arduino programming, and 3D design.
Formulate questions and hypotheses within the discipline: The team spent the first three weeks of the design phase brainstorming different ideas for the product design. The team created two different prototypes during this phase.
Understand how practitioners think within the discipline and view the world around them: I gained a lot of understanding of the research and its purpose from frequently meeting with the client and research assistants.
Predict, recognize, and weigh the risks and benefits of the project for others: The System Requirements Specification documents included Global, Safety, Environmental, and Cultural considerations for the device.
This design project focused on helping Dr. Zhu further his research in studying the Vibrations at the nodes of tensegrity structures. Since tensegrity structures are used in lightweight structural design in civil, and mechanical engineering, this experience has a strong connection to my grand challenge
This Design project had a lot of ups and downs. I had the opportunity to improve my teamwork/leadership skills as well as my problem-solving skills. Overall, I had an amazing team and enjoyed working with them every minute. The
