Biography

My name is Ejiro-Oghene Edema. I am an international student from Nigeria with a major in Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.  I came to the United States in December 2017 after completing my High School Diploma, completed my Associate's Degree of Science at The Community College of Baltimore County in 2020, and currently pursuing my Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. I am from a family of six and have three younger sisters.

Why did I join the Grand Challenge Scholar Program?

The Grand challenge of providing access to clean water and restoring and improving urban infrastructure aligns perfectly with one of the reasons I chose to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Dug-out wells and streams remain the primary water source in many rural communities and households like my grandparents in Nigeria. Working with many intelligent people and learning and applying my engineering knowledge to these challenges is a no-miss opportunity for me.

The Grand Challenge allows me to connect with individuals from different STEM disciplines worldwide.

Grand Challenge: Restore and Improve Urban Infrastructure

Poor transportation is one of the cankerworms eating up the growth of many communities, small and big, in many countries. Reliable transportation networks like properly tarred roads for streets and airport runways, overhead bridges, tunnels, railroad networks, and pedestrian walkway networks are needed to boost the economy and improve the quality of living in these countries.

Poor transportation networks are of particular interest to me as they affect how effective emergency responses to fire hazards, epidemics, pandemics, flooding, erosion, crime, and medical emergencies are. Reliable modes of transportation are needed to support military efforts against terrorism like Boko Haram in Nigeria and send medical aid to rural communities in the case of an epidemic like the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa.
