Graduate International Fellowships

The following fellowships provide funding for graduate-level study and research outside of the United States.

Please note: fellowship titles written in blue are available to international students. Fellowship titles written in black are available to US citizens only. Undocumented, DACA, US National, and Green Card eligibility is noted for fellowships that specifically state it in their guidelines. If Undocumented, DACA, US National, or Green Card eligibility is not explicitly stated in this database, that does not necessarily mean you are ineligible. Please check fellowship websites for more specific eligibility guidelines.

American Center of Oriental Research Scholarships and Fellowships

The American Center of Oriental Research provides graduate and postdoctoral funding for study and research primarily in Jordan. Application requirements vary based on the desired award, so it is up to the applicant to determine their eligibility for the award they choose to apply for. Campus deadlines for these awards are typically in mid-January, and national deadlines are typically in mid-February.

Eligibility based on citizenship varies based on the desired fellowship. Please check the eligibility requirements listed on the website.

Chevening Fellowship for Study in the United Kingdom

The Chevening Fellowship for Study in the United Kingdom provides funding non-British citizens for a full year of Master's-level study at any participating university in the United Kingdom. Potential fellows should have applied, and been accepted to, at least one graduate institution in the United Kingdom. It is expected that at the conclusion of the study, the award recipient returns to their home country for at least two years after the program of study is completed. National deadlines for the Chevening Fellowship are typically in early November, and campus deadlines are typically in early October.

The Chevening Fellowship is open to international applicants from Chevening-eligible countries. British nationals, British passport holders are NOT eligible for Chevening Fellowships (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).

Asian Cultural Council Fellowships

The Asian Cultural Council offers fellowships to graduate students from ADB Developing Member Countries that wish to study at an approved institution outside of the United States in one of the following fields: economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields. Upon completion of the program, scholars are expected to contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries. Deadlines vary depending on the desired fellowship, so it is up to the student to determine which fellowship is right for them and what the national deadline will be.

The Asian Cultural Council Fellowships are open to citizens of the following countries: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Niue, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, and Vietnam.

Belgian American Education Fund

The Belgian American Education Fund offers fellowships to US citizens and permanent residents to complete academic studies and research at academic institutions in Belgium. Fellowships are awarded for all subject fields, so long as the recipient carries out their studies at a Belgian institution. National deadlines for these fellowships are typically in late October, and campus deadlines are typically in late September.

The Belgian American Education Fund Fellowships for study in Belgium are only open to US citizens and permanent residents.

Boren National Security Fellowship Award

The Boren Fellowship offers funding for graduate students engaging in a long-term (at the least, 12 weeks, though longer programs are given preference) study abroad cultural and language immersion program. All Boren fellows should anticipate participating in a program that includes intensive language study in the applicant's target language. Students are encouraged to continue conducting research and academic pursuits in their desired field. Students should be pursuing a career in public service. More information on preferred graduate programs can be found on the site. The national deadline for the Boren Fellowship is typically in late January, and the campus deadline is typically in late December.

Cambridge Trust Fellowships

The Cambridge Trust Postgraduate Scholarship Program offers funding for non-UK students interested in studying at the University of Cambridge and demonstrate a need for financial assistance in order to fund their study. The scholarships are conditional on acceptance to the university, and will not be awarded without acceptance to Cambridge. Applications and requirements for fellowships are variable, so it is up to the applicant to determine their deadline and eligibility.

International students are eligible for Cambridge Trust Scholarships, so long as they have received an offer of admission from the University of Cambridge.

Canadian Federation of University Women Fellowships

The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) offers many fellowship opportunities for graduate and postgraduate women studying both in Canada and abroad in a variety of fields. Eligibility and requirements vary based on the fellowship, so it is up to the applicant to determine which fellowship is right for them. Deadlines are variable depending on the fellowship.

Canon Collins Education and Legal Assistance Trust Scholarships

The Canon Collins Education and Legal Assistance Trust offers fellowship and scholarship opportunities to students from select countries in Africa that are looking to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Ireland, or Malawi. Fellowship deadlines and eligibility varies based on the desired fellowship, so it is up to the applicant to determine their eligibility for their desired program.

Fellowships offered by the Canon Collins Trust are only open to scholars from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Critical Language Scholarship (US Nationals Eligible)

The Critical Language Scholarship offers funding for graduate and post-graduate students of all levels to do a summer study in the target language of their choice as an immersive language and cultural experience. Students of all disciplines are encouraged to apply on the understanding that the study of their target language is continued past the end of the scholarship. 15 different languages are offered for intensive study. National deadlines are typically in November, and campus deadlines are typically in October.

The Critical Language Scholarship is open to US citizens and nationals only.

DAAD Scholarships and Fellowships

DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service, provides fellowships and scholarships for graduate and postdoctoral students to study, research, and do immersive language studies at a DAAD-affiliated institution in Germany. Funding offered through DAAD is available to international students, so long as they are attending a US or Canadian institution. Funding and deadlines through DAAD are variable depending on the program desired, so it is up to the applicant to determine which fellowship is right for them, and what the deadlines are.

Fellowships with DAAD are available to international students, so long as they are enrolled at a US or Canadian institution, or have received a degree from a US or Canadian institution.

Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program

The English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Programs place Fulbrighters in classrooms abroad to provide assistance to the local English teachers. ETAs help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. The age and academic level of the students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. The Fulbright ETA program is available to international students, however international students should check the Fulbright website for full eligibility requirements. National deadlines for the Fulbright ETA are typically in mid-October, and campus deadlines are typically in mid-September.

Fulbright Fogarty Fellowship in Public Health

The Fulbright Fogarty Fellowship in Public Health provides funding to candidates who are currently enrolled in medical school or in a graduate-level program and who are interested in global health. The basic requirements and process for applying for the Fulbright-Fogarty Program are the same as for any Fulbright U.S. Student Study/Research Grant.

This fellowship is not offered for the 2022-2023 grant cycle.

Fulbright Hays Fellowship

The Fulbright Hays Fellowships are available to PhD candidates conducting research and training efforts overseas that focus on non-western foreign language and area studies. National deadlines for the Hays Fellowships are typically in mid-January, and campus deadlines are typically in mid-December.

Fulbright National Geographic Storytelling Fellowship

The Fulbright National Geographic Storytelling Fellowship provides funding for graduating seniors, masters, and PhD students to participate in an academic year of storytelling on a globally significant theme. This Fellowship is made possible through a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the National Geographic Society. The national deadline is typically in mid-October, and the campus deadline is typically in mid-September.

Fulbright Student Grants

Fulbright student grants offer funding for study or research in a wide variety of academic fields in approximately 140 different countries. Funding varies by country and program, so it is best for the applicant to familiarize themselves with the specific country of interest before pursing their application further. National deadlines for Fulbright fellowships are typically in mid-October, and campus deadlines are typically in mid-September.

Gates-Cambridge Fellowship

The Gates-Cambridge Fellowship offers funding for masters or PhD study in any field at The University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The national deadline for US citizens is typically in mid-October, and the campus deadline for US citizens is typically in mid-September. The national deadline for non-US citizens is dependent on the course of study. National deadlines for non-US citizens typically range from mid-December to early January, and campus deadlines for non-US citizens typically range from mid-November to early December.

International Research and Exchange Fellowships

The International Research and Exchange Board (IREX) offers fellowships, funding, and work/volunteer opportunities to applicants in a multitude of subject areas internationally. Deadlines and eligibility requirements are variable, so it is up to the applicant to determine which opportunity is right for them, and what the associated deadlines are.

Japan International Monetary Fund Scholarship

The Japan International Monetary Fund (IMF) Scholarship funds doctoral studies for Japanese citizens that are studying economics outside of Japan. At the completion of the program, award recipients must apply for a job at the Japan IMF. Applicants should be able to obtain their PhD before the age of 34. National deadlines are typically at the end of November, and campus deadlines are typically in late October.

The Japan IMF Scholarship is only open to Japanese citizens.

Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Regular Program

The Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJWBGSP) provides funds to students from World Bank member countries to pursue graduate studies at an institution in any country (except their own) in the following subject areas: economics, public administration, finance, planning, health, population, agriculture, infrastructure, information systems and aquatic resources (provided that the focus of study is on public policy aspects of these fields), environment and natural resource management, education, and other development-related subjects. National deadlines are typically in early May, and campus deadlines are typically in early April.

The JJWBGSP is only open to applicants that are citizens of World Bank member countries. The full list of World Bank member countries can be found at this link.

Marshall Scholarship

The Marshall Scholarship provides funding for students in possession of a bachelor's degree that are looking to pursue a master's degree in the United Kingdom. Applicants should have graduated after April 2019, and their degree should be from an accredited US institution. The national deadline for the Marshall Scholarship is typically in late September, and the campus deadline is typically in late August.

Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund Grants

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund awards grants up to $11,000 to women of at least 25 years of age from eligible countries that are pursuing a full-time degree program (undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral tracks accepted) at an institution that they are already enrolled in. Part-time students are accepted to the South Africa, Latin America, and Trinity Washington University programs. For the US-Canada Program, Applications are accepted between September 15 - January 15. For the Trinity Washington University Program, applications are accepted between September 15 and January 15. For the South Africa program, applications are accepted between May 15 to September 14 each year.

This program is open to international applicants.

Mitchell Scholarship

The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, accommodation, and a living stipend for one year of graduate level study at any institution in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Applicants must be between 18-30 years of age. National deadlines for the Mitchell Scholarship typically fall in late September, and campus deadlines are typically in late August.

Onassis Foundation Scholarships (Greek Citizens Only)

The Onassis Foundation provides 60 scholarships for graduate and postdoc studies outside of Greece, as well as 10 scholarships for graduate and postdoc studies within Greece, to students who have greek citizenship and/or nationality or to candidates who have graduated from a greek university and hold a High School Diploma from Greece, provided that they have a legal residence permit in Greece. This scholarship is awarded in a wide range of subject areas, including business, social sciences, natural/physical sciences, humanities, engineering, and technology. National deadlines are typically in late February, and campus deadlines are typically in late January.

Onassis Foundation Scholarships are open to Greek citizens and nationals only (as described above).

Open Society Institute Individual Fellowships and Scholarships

Organization of American States Scholarships

The Organization of American States offers a wide array of scholarship opportunities in English and Spanish to graduate an postdoc students across a wide range of subject areas both domestic and international. Studies may be carried out by on-site or by distance education or a combination of both, and must always be undertaken on a full-time basis. Scholarship eligibility and deadlines are variable, so it is up to the applicant to determine which opportunity is right for them, and the associated deadlines with that scholarship.

Rhodes Fellowship (DACA & Green Card Eligible)

The Rhodes Fellowship offers funding for masters or PhD study in any field at Oxford University. National deadlines are typically in mid-October, and campus deadlines are typically in mid-September.

Rotary Peace Fellowship

The Rotary Peace Fellowship awards fellowships to students pursuing a masters degree. This fellowship is ideal for early-career candidates that demonstrate a commitment to peace and conflict resolution, are able to undertake extensive reading and research, and are able to participate actively within a diverse cohort of students. Fellows can earn either a master’s degree in international relations, public administration, sustainable development, peace studies, conflict resolution, or a related field, or a professional development certificate in peace and conflict resolution.Students may study at a range of universities both domestic and international. National deadlines are typically in early July, and campus deadlines are typically in early June.

Social Science Research Council Fellowships

The Social Science Research Council provides up to 50 fellowships annually for aspiring social science researchers to pursue their work in a variety of different locations and modalities. The average award from the Social Science Research Council is around $18,750. Deadlines and eligibility criteria are variable, so it is up to the applicant to determine which program is right for them and the associated deadlines.

Schwarzman Scholarship

The Schwarzman Scholarship provides funding for one year of master's-level study at Tsinghua University in Beijing, and recruits students interested in strengthening their understanding of Chinese political relations with the rest of the world. Students from all academic subjects are welcome to apply, so long as they can articulate how the Schwarzman Scholarship will help them build their own potential as leaders and chinese cultural liaisons. Applicants should be between 18-28 years of age and proficient in the english language. The national deadline for the Schwarzman Scholarship is typically in September, and the campus deadline is typically in August. For Chinese citizens, the national deadline typically falls in May, and the campus deadline typically falls in April.
