Peer Mediators in Public Schools
An ombudsperson is an official, often appointed by the government, who investigates and resolves complaints, acting as a neutral intermediary between individuals and organizations, or between the public and a government agency. They provide an impartial and confidential way to address issues, often through mediation or by recommending solutions to administrative problems.

Tal is an experienced mediator and mediation trainer with a Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution from UMass Boston and a Law degree from TAU (Israel). Tal was trained as a mediator at Stanford Law School, the Harvard Mediation Program and UMass/Boston, and as an Ombudsperson by the International Ombuds Association. Before joining UA, Tal was the Executive Director of MWMS, a nonprofit mediation center in MA, where she mediated cases in courts and in the community.

Formally an Ombuds for the US Department of Labor, Marcus is a dispute resolution practitioner with experience as an organizational ombuds, mediator, conflict coach, facilitator, negotiation consultant, and conflict management skills trainer. He specializes in helping individuals and organizations develop strategies for addressing issues and concerns and moving forward constructively.

Maribel works with a small team helping students learn to be peer mediators. She joined the conflict resolution program to explore how conflict emerges and to study the different methods for resolving conflict. She is passionate about finding solutions to racial conflict and integrating those solutions into education, the criminal justice system, places of work, and everyday life. She found a unique aspect of the program are the friends she’s made and what she has learned from the wide array of students of diverse ages, backgrounds, and experiences

Certified in mediation according to the guidelines presented by the state of Massachusetts via an internship with he Conflict Resolution master's program at UMass Boston. She has worked in the Boston Municipal Courts and small claims cases in paired and solo mediation to aid parties in finding possible settlement. She is passionate about the avenues of dispute resolution and how dialogue and mediation bring families, communities, and peers together time and time again.

Camilo is an international dispute resolution expert with 30 years of experience as ombudsperson mediator, facilitator and trainer working for public, private, and international organizations. Previously he was Ombuds for the European Southern Observatory (ESO), managed the office of mediation services for the World Bank Group between 2008 and 2018, was lead ombudsperson at Princeton University, Ombudsperson at FGCU’s Business School, and Government Programs Coordinator for the Massachusetts Office of Dispute Resolution.

Shengjyl joined UMass Boston's Conflict Resolution Master's program as a Fulbright scholar from Macedonia. At UNHCR she uses her skills learned at UMass Boston to help and protect refugees and people displaced by violence, conflict and persecution.
Takaki has a bachelor's degree in Law from Kumamoto University, Japan. He graduated from the Conflict Resolution master's program in December 2024 and his research focus is on the rights of minority people in Japan.
Jeff was an accelerated master's student simultaneously earning a BA & MA. He chose conflict resolution to gain skills and tools that can be used in the real world. He found a strength of the program is sharing the classroom with people from various backgrounds and nationalities. These diverse perspectives have taught him much beyond what's learned in class. Jeff currently works as a mediator with the local community and mediation centers and shares, Jeff also uses his skills as a Union steward to help organize workers and advocate for the labor movement.
Joined the conflict resolution program to pursue a career change. As a student, he launched our on-campus mediation service, Beacon to Beacon and interned for the US Mission to the UN. He also participated in UMass Boston's summer institute in Northern Ireland
