Program

Part 1 - January 14 - How to cope with graduate life

In the first part of this workshop, we will have focus groups on the challenges and limitations experienced by graduate students. This session will host a talk discussion with Mary Xatse, M.S., LPC-A, NCC,   targeting imposter syndrome and strategies to cope with anxiety.

Mary Xatse is a counselor and diversity specialist at Clark University.  She graduated from the University of New Haven with a bachelor’s in criminal justice with a concentration in forensic psychology and received her master’s in clinical mental health counseling from Southern Connecticut State University. Clinically, she has an integrative approach that combines mindfulness-based practices, person-centered approaches, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Part 2 - Get together at AAG 2023

The outcome of this workshop is to build a community among graduate students where they can continue sharing and supporting each other beyond the workshop.  Moreover, as departments need to recognize the unique needs of underrepresented minority students  (Utley, Green, and Edwards 2014), we will document and share with geosciences departments and DEI offices recommendations to facilitate minority student success and ultimately increase the diversity in the discipline.

Part 3 - April 8 - What is next?

In the third part of the workshop, we will lead a career trajectories panel of successful women scholars in academic and non-academic positions in geospatial sciences.
