About
Why do we Want a Disability Cultural Center at UMass Amherst?
Historically, higher education has not been welcoming to disabled people. While some progress has been made, disabled people still face increased stigma and experience ableism in higher education. The goal of the Karuth Silver Cultural Center is to create a space at UMass Amherst for disabled community members to forge community, solve challenges that disabled people face in higher education, and to create a greater appreciation for Disability Culture and Disability Justice on campus. We seek to generate energy and action for purpose-- empowering the disabled community on campus and normalizing the disability experience.
