Democracy depends on open dialogue about politics. Yet there can be many impediments to this in day-to-day life. “Can We Talk About Politics?” is a structured and facilitated group discussion that will allow participants to explore the obstacles to productive conversations about political issues as well as strategies for effective communication and dealing with disagreement. The sessions will also acknowledge the limitations of dialogue. The goal is not to reach an agreement but to increase understanding.
These 90-minute sessions are open to any members of the UMass or broader community. They will include approximately 15 participants and at least one facilitator. Participants should expect to engage with people from different backgrounds, occupations, and ages. Facilitators will establish ground rules and guide the conversation, but discussions are meant to be open-ended.
The first of these discussions will take place at our Constitution Day Event on September 17th.
