Third Language

Background

The Department of Asian and European Languages caters to the need for third language courses by the university students and staff, as well as those requested by external organisations. The department is actively involved in establishing links with a number of foreign universities in China, France, Germany and Thailand.

Diploma Courses


1. TAC101 (FOUNDATION ARABIC LEVEL I)

TAC 101 is a basic course for level I. At this level student will be guided to master the basic skill of Arabic Language. Usage of simple and suitable syllabus is expected to strengthen students’ language skills in mastering four basic language skills at this beginning level.


2. TAC151 (FOUNDATION ARABIC LEVEL II)

This course is an extension of the Foundation Arabic ( Level I ) TAC101. Students taking this course are exposed to the vocabulary, grammar and Arabic phrases as well as basic at level II conversational Arabic in daily situational contexts. Cultural elements are also incorporated in the course. Emphasis is given to consolidating the four communication skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course aims to equip students with the ability to communicate using simple Arabic phrases relevant to elementary level.


3. TAC201 (FOUNDATION ARABIC FOR TOURISM LEVEL I)

This course is an extension from the Elementary ArabicTAC151 and it is offered only to students of the Diploma in Tourism Management. It focuses on the learning of the Elementary Arabic for a specific purpose that is tourism. In this course, students are exposed to terminologies, phrases, sentences, dialogues and clippings as well as cultural elements that are directed to dealings / transactions / communication and activities in tourism.


4. TAC 251 (FOUNDATION ARABIC FOR TOURISM LEVEL II)

This course is an extension from the Foundation Arabic For Tourism TAC201 and it is offered only to students of the Diploma in Tourism Management. It focuses on the learning of the Foundation Arabic for a specific purpose that is tourism. In this course, students are exposed to terminologies, phrases, sentences, dialogues and clippings as well as cultural elements that are directed to dealings / transactions / communication and activities in tourism.


5. TJC101 (FOUNDATION JAPANESE LEVEL I)

This is the first of a three part programme for Japanese Language Course. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanses structures to cultured information. It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence. This course also introduces some basic Japanese Cultural elements to the students.


6. TJC151 (FOUNDATION JAPANESE LEVEL II)

This is the second of a three part program for Japanese language course. Katakana characters will be introduced. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanese structures to cultured information. It helps to equip the students with introductory communicative competence.


7. TJC201 (FOUNDATION JAPANESE FOR TOURISM LEVEL I)

This is the third of a four parts program for the foundation Japanese Language course. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanese structures to cultured information. It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence for them to use the language in their working area. Reading and writing skills are in Romanized script.


8. TJC251 (FOUNDATION JAPANESE FOR TOURISM LEVEL II)

This is the last of a four parts program for the foundation Japanese Language course. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanese structures to cultured information. It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence for them to use the language in their working area. Reading and writing skills are in Romanized script.


9. TJC203 (FOUNDATION JAPANESE FOR HOTEL MANAGEMENT LEVEL I)

This is the first of a two parts program for Japanese language course. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanese structures to cultured information. It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence. This course also introduces some basic Japanese Cultural elements to the students.


10. TJC253 (FOUNDATION JAPANESE FOR HOTEL MANAGEMENT LEVEL II)

This is the second of a two part program for Japanese language course. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanese structures to cultured information. It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence and to use the language in their working area.


11. TMC101 (FOUNDATION MANDARIN LEVEL I)

The Foundation Mandarin course is intended for students who have no background in Mandarin or any character-based language. This is the first of a two level Mandarin Language program designed specifically for diploma students. The students will be taught appropriate elementary level vocabulary and grammar. The course will emphasize greatly on developing participants oral communication skills in situational contexts through class activities such as role plays, simulations and other relevant oral tasks. Students are expected to take part in all language activities conducted in class to ensure success in attaining the elementary level proficiency. In this course, students will be introduced to the Hanyu Pinyin system. In addition, Chinese culture will also be introduced in this course.


12. TMC151 (FOUNDATION MANDARIN LEVEL II)

This is the first of a two semester French Language course designed specifically for Diploma students (Hotel and Tourism Management). This course includes an integration of the four language skills using appropriate situational contexts with emphasis on daily situational communication in the hospitality industry.


16. TFC253 (FOUNDATION FRENCH FOR HOTEL MANAGEMENT LEVEL II)

This is the second of a two semester French Language course designed specifically for Diploma students (Hotel and Tourism Management). This course includes an integration of the four language skills using appropriate situational contexts in the hotel and tourism industry. The students will acquire the necessary skills through language functions and grammar.


17. TFC202 (FOUNDATION FRENCH FOR CULINARY ARTS LEVEL I)

This is the first of a two-semester French language course designed specifically for students pursuing the Diploma in Culinary Arts of the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management, UiTM. This course includes an integration of the four language skills which will enable students to develop a satisfactory level of fluency and confidence in using French as a functional tool for social interaction and communication. Students are required to pass this course as part of the university requirement.


18. TFC252 (FOUNDATION FRENCH FOR CULINARY ARTS LEVEL II)

This is the second of a two-semester French language course designed specifically for students pursuing the Diploma in Culinary Arts of the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management, UiTM. This course includes an integration of the four language skills which will enable students to develop a satisfactory level of fluency and confidence in using French as a functional tool for social interaction and communication. Students are required to pass this course as part of the university requirement.


Degree Courses

1. TAC401 (INTRODUCTORY ARABIC LEVEL I)

This course is the first stage of the Introductory Level of the Arabic Language programme. Students taking this course are exposed to the vocabulary, grammar and Arabic phrases as well as introductory conversational Arabic in daily situational contexts. Cultural elements are also incorporated in the course. Emphasis is given to consolidating the four communication skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course aims to equip students with the ability to communicate using simple Arabic phrases relevant to foundation level.

2. TAC451 (INTRODUCTORY ARABIC LEVEL II)

This course is the second stage of the Introductory Level of the Arabic Language programme. Students taking this course are exposed to the vocabulary, grammar and Arabic phrases as well as intermediate level conversational Arabic in daily situational context. Cultural elements are also incorporated in the course. Emphasis is given to consolidating the four communication skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course aims to equip students with the ability to communicate using more complex Arabic phrases relevant to intermediate level.

3. TAC501 (INTRODUCTORY ARABIC LEVEL III)

This course is the third stage of the Introductory Level of the Arabic Language programme. Students taking this course are exposed to the vocabulary, grammar and Arabic phrases as well as basic conversational Arabic in daily situational contexts. Cultural elements are also incorporated in the course. Emphasis is given to consolidating the four communication skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course aims to equip students with the ability to communicate using simple Arabic phrases relevant to foundation level.

4. TJC401 (INTRODUCTORY JAPANESE LEVEL I)

This is the first of a three part programme for Basic Japanese Language Course. Hiragana characters will be introduced. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanses structures to cultured information. It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence. This course also introduces some basic Japanese Cultural elements to the students.

5. TJC451 (INTRODUCTORY JAPANESE LEVEL II)

It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence. This course also introduces some basic Japanese Cultural elements to the students.

7. TMC401 (INTRODUCTORY MANDARIN LEVEL I)

The Introductory Mandarin Language course is intended for students who have no background in Mandarin or any character-based language. This is the first of a three-level Mandarin Language programme designed specifically for UiTM Bachelor Degree students. The students will be taught appropriate introductory level vocabulary and grammar. The course will emphasize greatly on developing participants oral communication skills in situational contexts through class activities such as role plays, simulations and other relevant oral tasks. Students are expected to take part in all language activities conducted in class to ensure success in attaining the elementary level proficiency. In this course, students will be introduced to the Hanyu Pinyin system. In addition, Chinese characters and Chinese culture will also be introduced in this course.

8. TMC451(INTRODUCTORY MANDARIN LEVEL II)

The Introductory Mandarin Language course is intended for students who have no background in Mandarin or any character-based language. This is the second of a three-level Mandarin Language programme designed specifically for UiTM Bachelor Degree students. The students will be taught appropriate basic level vocabulary and grammar. The course will emphasize greatly on developing participants oral communication skills in situational contexts through class activities such as role plays, simulations and other relevant oral tasks. Students are expected to take part in all language activities conducted in class to ensure success in attaining the elementary level proficiency. In this course, students will be introduced to the Hanyu Pinyin system. In addition, Chinese characters and Chinese culture will also be introduced in this course.

The course aims to equip students with the ability to communicate using simple French phrases relevant to foundation level.

11. TFC451 (INTRODUCTORY FRENCH LEVEL II)

This is the second of a three semester French language course designed specifically for students in the Bachelor’s degree programme at UiTM where a pass in the third language is a university requirement. This course includes an integration of the four language skills which will enable students to develop a satisfactory level of fluency and confidence in using French as a functional tool for social interaction and communication. Verbal and non-verbal communication skills are taught with visual aids. Students are also taught to anticipate and respond to questions appropriately. This course also provides relevant cultural and social elements.

12. TFC501 (INTRODUCTORY FRENCH LEVEL III)

This is a course for students to develop the strategies and skills necessary for effective oral presentations and basic written skills. This course enables students to develop a satisfactory level of fluency and confidence in using French as a functional tool for social interaction and communication. Students also learn some aspects of French culture and civilization.

13. TGC401 (INTRODUCTORY GERMAN LEVEL I)

This course is the first stage of the Introductory Level of the German Language. This course is designed for undergraduates who intend to equip themselves with a basic knowledge of spoken and written German. It will also enable them to develop a satisfactory level of oral fluency and confidence in using German as a functional tool of social interaction and communication.

14. TGC451 (INTRODUCTORY GERMAN LEVEL II)

This course is the second stage of the Introductory Level of the German Language. This course is designed for undergraduates who intend to equip themselves with a introductory knowledge of spoken and written German. It will also enable them to develop a satisfactory level of oral fluency and confidence in using German as a functional tool of social interaction and communication.

15. TGC501 (INTRODUCTORY GERMAN LEVEL III)

This course is the third stage of the Introductory Level of the German Language. This course is designed for undergraduates who intend to equip themselves with a introductory knowledge of spoken and written German. It will also enable them to develop a satisfactory level of oral fluency and confidence in using German as a functional tool of social interaction and communication.

16. TKC401 (INTRODUCTORY KOREAN LEVEL I)

This course is designed for undergraduates who intend to equip themselves with a basic knowledge of spoken and written Korean. It is the first of a three parts programme for introductory Korean course, and the syllabus ranges from learning writing Hangeul, the Korean character, basic language structures to cultural aspects embedded in the language. It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence within the introductory level 1 capacity. This course also introduces how to type Hangeul using computer, and accessing online resources for further self-learning purposes.

17. TKC451 (INTRODUCTORY KOREAN LEVEL II)

This is the second of a three parts programme for the Introductory Korean language course. With the prior knowledge of Introductory Korean level I, the students are introduced with more grammar knowledge, situational, and functional expressions with more vocabularies required in level 2 of the Introductory Korean. Through this course students also will be learnt Korean culture imbedded in the Language.

18. TKC501 (INTRODUCTORY KOREAN LEVEL III)

This is the third of a three parts programme for Korean language course. With the prior knowledge of Introductory Korean level 1 and level 2, the students will be introduced more complex sentences and learnt paragraph with more functional, situational expressions. It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence with better command of Korean language. Through the lessons the students will be learnt Korean culture imbedded in the Language.

19. TIC401 (INTRODUCTORY ITALIAN LEVEL I)

This course is designed for undergraduates who intend to equip themselves with a basic knowledge of spoken and written Italian. It will also enable them to develop a satisfactory level of oral fluency and confidence in using Italian as a functional tool of social interaction and communication.

20. TIC401 (INTRODUCTORY ITALIAN LEVEL II)

This is the second of a three semester Italian language course designed specifically for students in the Bachelor’s degree program at UiTM where a pass in the third language is a university requirement. This course includes an integration of the four language skills which will enable students to develop a satisfactory level of fluency and confidence in using Italian as a functional tool for social interaction and communication. It also provides necessary elements of Italian culture and civilization.

21. TIC401 (INTRODUCTORY ITALIAN LEVEL III)

This is the the third and last semester of the Italian language course designed specifically for students in the Bachelor’s degree program at UiTM where a pass in the third language is a university requirement. This course includes an integration of the four language skills which will enable students to develop a satisfactory level of fluency and confidence in using Italian as a functional tool for social interaction and communication. It also provides necessary elements of Italian culture and civilization.
