This is an exciting new step for everyone. Come on in! Lets take a look at your day.
Our school uses a balanced day schedule. This means that our day starts at 8:55am and is broken up into three blocks with two nutrition breaks in between.
Nutrition Breaks are at 10:55am and 1:15pm followed by a 20 min recess.
School ends at 3:15pm
Drop off and Pickups are Outside on pavement between the Portables and School. We call this the "Drop off Kindergarten Zone". (ECE's are out in the area for early morning duty by 8:35am every morning)
We are very lucky to offer a snack program at our school every morning. All children are welcome to enjoy this great program. They love having the chance to try new foods with their friends.
During the two nutrition breaks, we will eat the food that our family has sent for us. Fruits and vegetables, yogurt, hummus, or whole grain crackers and cheese would be considered a great snack. Canada’s Food Guide discourages foods with high sugar, high salt, and high trans-fats. We have Lunch Helpers come to our room to help us open containers that maybe more difficult as well as helping us with our zippers that we are stilling learning how to use.
Recess! This is a great time to run and climb. The kindergarten classes have their own fenced in area for recess. We have a climber as well as a house and slides. There are also sandboxes to dig in and trees to play under. Children get the chance to play with bikes, plasma cars, trucks, shovels and lots, lots more. This is a great place to be at recess. You may notice it's all fenced in and that teachers have keys, this is to keep us safe.
This is a very fun place to be. It's almost like recess, but inside! We get to play with a lot of fun stuff such as:
scooter boards, plasma cars
soft balls, exercise balls
skipping ropes, hoola hoops
scoops, bean bags, steps
and lots lots more
Some of us will have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Walls (if in English tract). He is the gym teacher.
As well as building independent skills, we also work on team building skills. We work as a team when playing floor hockey, soccer or completing a replay race. Sometimes there's opportunities to help teach a friend by showing them how to balance, do a somersault, or jump on one foot.
This room tends to be a quieter space. There are lots of books as well as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) materials. We get to come here once a week to search for books that we would like to read or share with our families at home.
Ms. Sinclair our Librarian also invites us to the learning commons to try out new STEM challenges that she has put together for us.
We have done some coding with Beebots. We got to work with Dash our robot. We also got to build houses, boxes, and traps out of the make-do cardboard construction kit.
It is a lot of fun!
Music is always a great time. Who doesn't love to sing and dance?
You will sing, play instruments and move to the music. You will learn to keep a beat and tell the difference between loud and soft.
It's also a great way to learn new vocabulary in both English and French and share it with your family. Families love to hear our new songs when we come home from school.
Listening to stories and talking a lot! Sharing our ideas and listening to what our friends have to say. Writing together, learning new letters and sounds. Working with words and beginning to read and write. Alphabet songs and stories, puzzles, and making from playdough to things we find on our school yard. Drawing pictures to share our ideas and thinking.
Bigger or smaller? Longer or shorter? Finding patterns and making them with items in our classroom and that we find in our school yard. Working with numbers 1-10. Recognizing different shapes. Working with money. As well as learning to use new tools like measuring tapes, scales and ten frames. Songs and stories about math concepts.
We will become more aware of our own health and well being. Explore, predict, observe and ask questions about our surroundings. We begin to understand why we need to care and respect our environment.
Who doesn't like to build?
There are lots of materials to build and create whatever your imagination can invision. The possibilities are endless. What will you build first?
There is always time to create some art work. Whether it's painting or drawing a picture, creating a collage or mosaic piece. It always feels good to take it home and show it off to your family.
Where we explore and experiment with nature. To connect to the natural world through inquiry and play. Please dress your child to play outside as we try to be outside every day, weather permitting.
