Perhaps the most surprising to me of all of the course topics was that of Game Lesson Plan. Games are generally not something that I incorporate into my classrooms. As an educator specializing in Adult Education, I incorrectly assumed that games would not even be a consideration. That is, until being introduced to Quandry.
Through playing Quandry, I was able to appreciate how it can enhance learning, and teaching, in the adult learner space. The game’s unique approach to applying critical thinking skills was nothing short of revolutionary. I recognize the value that this brings and intend to incorporate it into my adult education classes.
Additionally, when challenged to create a game lesson plan, I was inspired to propose a “Let’s Go to Planet Fraction” game. The idea is to create an educational tool that would help eliminate fear of fractions often expressed by students of all ages. By design, it is based on knowledge and skills and presented to enhance learning without adding to cognitive overload. It presents an out-of-the-box opportunity that could be utilized in the classroom as a teaching aid or for student practice both in and out of the classroom.
Because of the Games topic in EME3044, I am able to visualize using a video game as a teaching tool. I would never have thought that I would even consider this, but am truly appreciative of my newfound respect for game technology.
