There are plenty of good reasons for learning Latin...having Mageesh as a teacher is ONLY one of them!
First and foremost, you will be with your language teacher for almost three years. Consider the classroom experience, your learning style, their teaching style, and consider what it is that you hope to achieve from your foreign language learning experience.
What do you want to achieve?
Broaden my cultural perspective,
Help with my future career,
Help with my other academics,
Read and Write in the language,
Speak in the language,
Feel successful and supported by my teacher,
Feel interested in the language (hobbies, history, travel),
Increase Your Confidence and Sense of Personal Achievement, Challenge myself
At some point, you may ask yourself, why learn Latin (compared to a modern language) though?
Here are some reasons:
It improves your speaking and writing skills in English (90% of English is Latin)
It helps you learn other languages more quickly (since the Romance languages came from the Romans)
It helps you academically, in your other classes (math, science, health, english, history, etc)
It develops your brain in ways that other languages do not (Latin is an inflected language)
It has 2,000 years of reading materials (from original, medieval, and neo-works like Galileo's treaties and even Diary of Wimpy Kid)
It expands your world viewpoint the widest (since a large part of the map was under the Roman empire at one point in time)
It develops analytical ability (Latin is an inflected language)
It develops reading comprehension (English roots, suffixes, prefixes are from Latin/Greek)
It deepens your understanding of humanity (the Romans have shaped our world in every facet of society)
It increases your cultural literacy (since a large part of the map was under the Roman empire at one point in time)
There are many misconceptions about and its usefulness in this modern age.
All over the world, people are still speaking Latin (in the USA, NYC and Kentucky are the spoken meccas, some are being taught Latin as their first language, some graduate programs are taught entirely in Latin, most of Europe speaks Latin - Germany has towns that have never stopped speaking Latin since the middle ages; our best speakers have Spanish or Italian as their first language).
Latin is not just for lawyers and doctors, it's for everyone! (as adults, we need to have advanced speaking, writing, and reading skills to move ahead in this world as a professional. Latin can be found in 90% of English - whether you are a hair colorist or a car mechanic, Latin skills will improve your English and improve your ability to learn other Romance languages.
