APPLICATION DEADLINE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12th
Welcome to the jazz audition process! This is a unique opportunity for you to grow as a musician, and I want you to embrace it as a learning experience. Some of the demands may be challenging for you—and that's exactly the idea. Focus on practicing consistently and correctly. Even the smallest amount of improvement is a huge success.
Jazz is a collaborative art form, and it's meant to be played with others. I strongly recommend getting together with your friends who are also auditioning to work on the repertoire together. Not only will you learn more, but you'll also have fun in the process!
Regarding the chorus of improvisation, please don't be intimidated! This portion of the audition is simply pass/fail. The only things I'm looking for are:
Did you attempt to improvise?
Did you know where you were in the form with the play-along track?
If the answer to both of these questions is "yes," you've passed. I'm the only one who will hear it, and I just want to see where everyone is in their improvisation journey. After all, jazz is only jazz if there's an element of improvisation.
Lastly, please be sure to submit everything that is required. If I receive an incomplete submission, you will not be eligible to participate.
I look forward to hearing your submissions!
Sean J. Kennedy
AUDITION MATERIALS
Add "Cold Duck Time" and "Doxy" to your playlists (now!) and listen to them every day. The original versions are the YouTube links provided👉 . Add them to your Spotify, Apple Music, or whatever streaming service you use.
When you are ready and feel confident with the tunes, you should be able to sing the melody (head) from memory, without your instrument. This is a good sign that you are ready to prepare the piece on your instrument. If you can't sing it to yourself don’t record it yet.
How do you get good enough to sing it? Listen to the original version so much that you can’t help but sing along.
Video Submission for the Audition: Using the specific YouTube playalong tracks provided, play each tune in this order: the head twice, improvise for one chorus, and then return to the head. The playalong track is longer than what you need for me to see, just so you know.
Learn the melodies just like the horn players. On the second pass of the head, you may choose to comp (accompany) the melody instead of playing it. All other requirements are the same.
Requirement 1: Play along with the original tracks for "Cold Duck Time" and "Doxy" in their entirety. Try your best to copy exactly what the drummer on the recording is doing. For your video submission, please ensure I can hear both the original track and your drumming. Using headphones to listen to the original track while recording is the simplest way to achieve this without mixing equipment. One ear on, one ear off tends to work best.
Requirement 2: On page 86 of the packet, please perform the four beats at the bottom of the page. Start with exactly what is written, and then get more creative, but don’t lose time or the groove. The key here is a great, steady groove. Don't worry about playing fast—the most important thing is that it feels good and remains consistent.
Play each groove for about one minute. No accompaniment track is needed—you are the groove!
