FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Reach out to Sean J. Kennedy, skennedy@udsd.org, if you have a question that isn’t covered.
Q: How much does a band instrument cost?
A: We understand that cost can be a concern, but we have options to make it manageable. For those without a personal instrument, we offer instrument rentals through our trusted partner, Music & Arts, for the school year. Typically, instrument rentals range from $150 to $200 annually. It's worth noting that any money invested in renting goes towards owning the instrument, making it a viable long-term option. Many families opt to purchase the instrument outright by the time their child transitions to middle school. If purchasing isn't feasible, rest assured that we're committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to participate. Our school district and I are here to assist with providing instruments, ensuring that no child misses out due to financial constraints.
Q: My child is involved in _____________ (sports, orchestra, dance, clubs, swimming, soccer, Scouts, you name it), we are worried about time management.
A: Rest assured, time management is a priority. While practicing at home will be necessary, our lessons will conveniently take place during the school day. We understand your concerns about busy schedules, so please note that we only have 2-3 evening performances throughout the year. Additionally, we offer band practice once a week before school at 8:15 A.M. Many students in similar programs have successfully balanced these activities, so your child's participation is well-supported.
Q: I am worried that my child will fall behind because they miss 30 minutes of AMAZING instruction in their 4th-grade class.
A: Rest assured, specialized instruction is nothing to worry about. Numerous studies have consistently shown that pull-out lessons like band do not lead to learning loss. In fact, playing an instrument has been proven to enhance brain development, which can actually improve overall learning and academic performance. We collaborate closely with the 4th-grade teachers to build a solid lesson schedule.. If participating in band lessons were detrimental, why would all the teachers encourage your child to join the band program? Trust in the holistic benefits and positive impact that music education can have on your child's academic journey.
Q: My child is not “musical”, or has shown no interest in an instrument.
A: It's important to share my personal experience with parents to encourage their children to join the band program. In 3rd grade, I wasn't particularly interested in music beyond enjoying "Star Wars." However, today I am a professional musician and music teacher, and I owe much of that to a letter and assembly that sparked my interest back then. Neither of my parents played an instrument, and they regretted not having that experience. This is the perfect time for your child to start their musical journey. Our district offers numerous great activities, but joining the band program opens up one of the greatest opportunities available. Missing out on band next year means missing a chance for your child to discover their musical talents and passions.
Q: What is the next step?
A: Get ready for an exciting journey ahead! Don't forget to turn in the half sheet ASAP. We'll be processing all rentals in May and June, ensuring that your child's instrument is ready for action by next school year. Imagine the thrill of having their instrument delivered to school, ready to kick off their musical adventure immediately! Rest assured, it's a straightforward and seamless experience that will set your child up for a fantastic musical journey!
