This program aims to develop teachers in Southeast Asia. After participating in this program, I truly felt that it helped me understand the differences in teaching among various countries — in terms of culture, teaching methods, and students. I will apply the valuable lessons I gained from this program to my own teaching.
Procedures of practicum
I joined a one-month exchange program in the Philippines. However, the first week was a bit disappointing because a typhoon affected the area, causing class cancellations and the postponement of the welcome ceremony. It took about 5 to 7 days after my arrival before I could finally go to school. In the second week, I was surprised to find that the first class started at 6 a.m., but I stayed strong and continued with classroom observations. In the third week, I began lesson planning and rehearsing for the teaching demonstration. On the weekends, we also had a chance to relax and travel a bit before the final week, which was when the actual teaching exam took place—just before returning home.

The challenges of practicum
At first, I was worried about many things because everything was so new to me. We initially traveled with our professor, but due to the typhoon, the school was temporarily closed, and our professor had to return early. This made us a bit anxious about staying on our own. However, after getting through the first day, things gradually got better. Even though having to observe classes starting as early as 6 a.m. was quite challenging, for me, it became a strong motivation. It truly allowed me to see the differences in teaching and learning between countries.
Outcomes of Practicum
The teaching went really well—so well that I was honestly surprised myself. After the lesson, the students shouted my name loudly, and I was overwhelmed with joy. I’m truly grateful to my mentor teacher and my buddy, who guided and supported me through everything. I learned so many useful teaching techniques from them—many of which I still use to this day.
Overall Impression
It’s an unforgettable experience—every time I talk or think about it, I feel a wave of nostalgia and so many emotions come rushing back. It was truly a wonderful experience. I gained so much confidence in using English, as well as valuable teaching techniques and communication skills with students. These are things I could never have learned anywhere else. I’m truly grateful and hope that others will have the same kind of opportunity in the future.
