During the observation of an English lesson in a Grade 9 classroom, I witnessed an engaging and well-organized session in which the teacher skillfully integrated grammar instruction with reading activities. Rather than teaching grammar in isolation, the teacher used a reading passage as the foundation for exploring and practicing specific grammatical structures. This approach made the lesson more meaningful, relevant, and accessible to students.

At the start of the class, the teacher greeted the students warmly and began with a short review activity to activate prior knowledge. This involved a few guiding questions related to students’ experiences and opinions on the theme of the day’s article, which encouraged them to speak and interact in English from the very beginning. The teacher then introduced the reading passage, carefully chosen to contain rich examples of the grammar structure that would be the focus of the lesson.

The reading text was both age-appropriate and thematically engaging, containing a mix of narrative and descriptive elements. As students read, the teacher guided them to notice how certain grammar patterns were used in context. Key sentences were highlighted and discussed in class to help students infer grammar rules from authentic usage rather than memorizing them in isolation.

Teaching Materials and Media Used

During the lesson, the teacher effectively incorporated a variety of instructional materials to support students’ understanding and maintain their engagement. These materials were thoughtfully selected to align with the learning objectives and accommodate different learning styles.

PowerPoint Presentation

The teacher utilized a well-designed PowerPoint presentation to structure the lesson and guide students through key concepts. The slides included visually engaging elements such as colorful images, diagrams, and highlighted examples to illustrate grammar points and sentence structures. The PowerPoint also provided step-by-step explanations, sample sentences, and short exercises for classroom interaction. This helped students follow the lesson clearly and stay focused throughout the session.

Textbook

The lesson was supported by the use of a standard English textbook approved for Grade 9 students. The textbook provided a reading passage relevant to the grammar topic, along with vocabulary lists, comprehension questions, and grammar explanations. The teacher used the textbook not only as a source of content but also as a reference for structured practice. Students followed the reading text in their books while listening to the audio, and later completed grammar-based activities directly from the book.
